41. "Such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science." [05/71; 06/5]
研究界的一些非主流领域,比如星象学、占卜术和意念及超自然探索,在社会中起到了很重要的作用,因为它们满足了人们无法从主流科学获得的需求。(少数和多数之非主流学科)
Position: disagree. 主要是反对。
1 admittedly, 它们确实起到了一定的作用。这些非主流领域的东西在一定程度上可以满足人们的好奇心,对求知事物的预测。 (对astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal等做一下解释。)
2 however, 它也是有危害的,1)缺乏科学的依据,虽然存在了几千年但末发挥其明显的作用。人们更相信科学。2)一些现象现代科学无法解释,但多次实验证实,这些非主流的东西也无法证实。For example: The fallacy of predictor predicts the doomsday in 1999.

Such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.
With the development of science and technology, the mainstream of the areas of inquiry as physics, chemistry, and biology. But there are many people turn to the non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society, because these areas may satisfy human needs which are not interpreted by mainstream science. As far as I concerned, I believe that both the mainstream and the non-mainstream contribute to the society, but we should not overemphasize the non stream areas which may harm our society sometimes.
Admittedly, the non-mainstream areas have some positive effect on our society and life, because when the main stream science can not address the phenomena, the non-mainstream can satisfy human needs in its way. For example, in the ancient times, people knew little about nature and nobody can explain most nature phenomena, they wander why the sun rises in the east and sinks in the west, they are confused by the nature phenomena such as the lighting, fire and raining. Take the astrology for example, long time ago, people observed the stars in the sky to foretell the weather condition and one’s future. With the observation, many records concerned starts were left to the later comer. Such information contributes a lot to the development of the astronomy. Only the non-mainstream can address why they happen.
However, the non-mainstream areas are harm to our society. For one thing, although the non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits exist for thousands of years, the effect of non-mainstream is not conspicuous because it was not based on the science. For another, there are many phenomena the contemporary science can not address, but through several times the non-mainstream also can not explain why the phenomena exist. For example, the fallacy of the predictor predicts that the dooms day in 1999. Therefore the effect of the non-mainstream is negative.
With the development of science, the fewer and fewer people would believe the non-mainstream because most phenomena can be interpreted by the contemporary science. The non-mainstream will be instead by the mainstream such as physics, chemistry and so on. On the one hand, the mainstream has interpreted the most of problems which puzzle human. On the other hand, the psychology methods are increased and there are more and more people go to see the psychologist.
To sum up, I think both non-mainstream areas and mainstream areas contribute to our society, we should not overemphasize the effect of non-mainstream, at the same time we also should not neglect the effect of non mainstream. To better out society, we also try our best to take the science to address the phenomena which confuse us. |
