The video camera,as an innovative tool in the ways people document,has its fantastic merit:to record accurately in the temporal and spatial aspects of events and to show the vivid scenes and sound of events.Although many believed that video camera has become a more important form of docummentation than written records,I contend that since both of them has its advantages and drawbacks,it is unfair to debase the importance of written records.Video camera records are only a complimentary form in the realm of documentation.

Admittedly,video camera indeed plays an important part in the contemporary documentation.Becouse of its advantages in the temporal an spatial aspects,many news mediums use it to cover various kinds of live events.such as the broadcasting of the boiled ambience of a baseball game,the revealing of the violence of a street riot,and the represantation of the saddenedness of a battle.Besides,many nature phenomenas,like the process and the huge destruction of a flood,a tornado and so on.These can hardly described by a written record,at least not so vividly as video camero.What's more,Video camera can also memorize the beautiful bygones.Like the process of a travel,kinds of ceremony like the commencements and wedding ceremonies.

What's anther important merit of video camera is the availability of its usage in collecting prime evidence.Now more and more markets put video cameras in every aisles to prevent goods loss in case of shoplifting.In the banks,video cameras are also used to moniter the situation in front of the counter,once a bank robbery happened,the police could easily find out the way to catch the crimer through scrutinizing the recorded video tape.Similay usages of video camera are adopted by many other institutions like the schools,the government buildings,the residences and so on.Written records can do little in this case.When a crime accured,its unauthentic for the police to detect the case merely depend on the narration of the witnesses.

Although video camera has shown a powerful capability to record the images and sound of the live events,it also have some drawbacks.It inherently lacks a broad extent in space and time span,it also records little about the recorder's subjective ideas,Which all can be supplimented by written records.Written records have the attribute to reflect the recorder's subjective attitudes,opinions and values,which can dig deeper into the essence of events.Through investigating the subjective attitudes and opinions revealed in a written record,one can accurately deduce the society's values of the era,which is also helpful to the study of history.Besides,Written records play a more effctive role when it comes to the statistics of information.Like the analysis in all kinds of data in a baseball game,the culculation of the numbers of police and rioters and the information of casualty of a riot,the daily amount of the input and output of a supermarket and so on.These all can be hardly recorded by a video camera and must be done by written records.

To sum up,both video camera has its own merit and drawbacks.any assumptions to aggrandize the importance of the video camera will be proved unfair.When it comes to news report,recording memories,collecting prime evidence,video camero are sheer objective.While in the area of reflecting subjective attitudes and views,and the area of information statistics,the method of written records have its unreplaceable advantages.Since subjective attitudes and views can highly reflect the essence of events and the process of information statistics is also the process to turn the information from rawness to more valued sophstication.It is inculpable to conclude that the way of written records,instead of video camera,is still the most important form of documentation.
