Argument47 Scientists studying historical weather patterns have discovered that in the mid-sixth century, Earth suddenly became significantly cooler. Although few historical records survive from that time, some accounts found both in Asia and Europe mention a dimming of the sun and extremely cold temperatures. Either a huge volcanic eruption or a large meteorite colliding with Earth could have created a large dust cloud throughout Earth's atmosphere that would have been capable of blocking enough sunlight to lower global temperatures significantly. A large meteorite collision, however, would probably create a sudden bright flash of light, and no extant historical records of the time mention such a flash. Some surviving Asian historical records of the time, however, mention a loud boom that would be consistent with a volcanic eruption. Therefore, the cooling was probably caused by a volcanic eruption.
Outline: From the article, the speaker asserts that the cooling of the earth was probably caused by a volcanic eruption rather than a large meteorite colliding with earth. But from the speaker’s reasoning, both the possibility of causes cannot be confirmed and disregarded.
From the article, the speaker asserts that the cooling of the earth in the mid-sixth century was probably caused by a volcanic eruption rather than a meteorite collision with earth. However, from the speaker's reasoning, i think that both the possibility of causes should not be confirmed and disregarded.
First, the speaker says that few historical records survive from that time, just some related accounts in Asia and Europe. Therefore, it is very specious about the truth of the records. To start with, we do not confirm whether these accounts were recorded objectively by people. Although both the Asia and Europe have these records which seems it is reasonable that these records are believable. But maybe only Europe recorded these and brought them to Asia for researching or only Asia recorded and brought them to Europe. Secondly, if these records were the facts, whether a dimming of the sun and extremely cold temperatures happened the reasonable time. Perhaps before the sun dimmed, the temperatures had already turned. In this situation, the dimming of the sun may not the cause of temperatures decreasing.
Secondly, assume that the dimming of the sun happened before the temperatures turned to cold, perhaps other factors induced the changing of global temperature. Maybe some special materials from other stars decreased the temperature drastically during that period. Or the geometrical changing contributed to the changing of temperature or the level of ocean varied.
Thirdly, provided that only the sunlight was blocked so that the temperature deceased significantly. What made the sunlight be blocked? Perhaps it was certain object in universe that clouded the sunlight. Or it was the character of sun during that time could not emit enough lights. Therefore, both a huge volcanic eruption and a large meteorite colliding with Earth which could have created a large dust cloud throughout Earth's atmosphere to block the sunlight are just two possible factors.
Finally, suppose that we can exclude other factors which may cloud the sunlight, it is dubious that it was a volcanic eruption caused the cooling rather than a large meteorite collision. The speaker claims that a large meteorite collision would probably create a sudden bright flash of light but no records mention such a flash at that time. Perhaps this flash did not attract the recorders’ attention or recorders did not take into consider that they must record this phenomenon, or some records about bright flash were lost. Meanwhile, the speaker mentions that some surviving Asian historical records of that time mention a loud boom that sounds like a volcanic eruption, but no surviving records proved that there was a volcanic eruption, that is to say, this sound may be a curious phenomenon which people could not figure out rather than a volcanic eruption induced.
To sum up, both the volcanic eruption and a large meteorite collision possibly caused the cooling of temperature at that time, Meanwhile, neither of them possibly caused this phenomenon. The speaker’s assertion need suffice evidence and thorough reasoning.
