TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
Can we tell much about a society's ideas, attitudes and values by observing the look, dress and act of its people as the speaker claims? In my point of view, while the way people appear and behave often reveals their attitudes and interests, in certain respects, however, the way people look, dress and act can conceal their attitudes and values.
Turning first to a free society, the way people look, dress and act can sometimes reflects the society's attitudes and interests. For instance, a society whose members tend to work long hours might indicate the society is one of high value on hardworking. While a society whose members tend to dream away their lives might indicate the society's attitude places a low value on hardworking, but place a high value on comfort and pleasure. Moreover, by observing the appearance of a society of people whose clothing is unique and distinct to their special tradition, one can possibly consider the society as value tradition over modernization. On the other hand, a society, such as contemporary America, is fraught with cultural diversity, therefore its members display their preference for individual freedom and cultural diversity by various appearance and manners of behaviors.
When it comes to a hard oppressed society or a highly religious society, however, the look, dress and behavior of the society members might belie the true values, ideas, and attitudes of these people. Take Germany in the period of the Second world War for example, not only did Fascism unified the appearance and behavior of its social members, but also attitudes, ideas, and even the races of people within the area under Fascism's crucial power. How could the appearance and behavior of its people reflect their actual attitudes and interests under this condition? Or consider women living in Mohammedan countries, required by the special demand of the Mohammedan religion, these women have to ware almost similar black coats when they go out. Maybe these women lust for diversity in appearance from the bottom of their heart, however, under the influence of their religion, their have no choice but go with the same clothes.
Moreover, as the global is becoming smaller and smaller by means of various ways of transportation and communication, the ways people look, dress and act in different societies are becoming more and more similar. Connected by a net of telephone wires, the internet, and hundreds and thousands of computers, people with different ideas and values can communicate with each other, thus bring some new attitudes and values to the society to which they belong. Besides, people in a remote area or rural area can even keep with newest fashion in Paris, providing that these people can keep in touch with instruments and tools for communication. Moreover, as a certain way of look, dress, and act might not be unique to a certain society, we can hardly tell a society's ideas, attitudes and values from other by simply judging form their appearance and behaviors in the tightly collected global village.
To sum up, although the statement has merit in that we can sometimes recognize a free society's ideas and values by the look, dress and act of its people. However, in an oppressed society, the way people dress and behave may belie their true attitudes and interests. Additionally, in today's modernized world, people from different societies are more alike than they were which makes it difficult to recognize a society's values simply by the appearance of its people.
