It is no doubt that pictures and sounds have colored our lives and also recorded them vividly .Thanks to video documentation, we could experience those events as if we were there. We could see their expressions, speeches and movements at the same time in that we could get information directly ,hence need not have to got it  indirectly from words written by others, which maybe omit some information we needed since that  the author will only record what he or she thought deserved. As we all know, the best way to learn what a tree looks like is that you see it by your own eyes rather than listen or read description by others.



However, it is hard to say that video camera always provides an accurate record of contemporary life. One reason is that people do not always tell the truth in front of the video camera. If nowadays a politician delivered a speech recorded by video camera promising that he or she will control the inflation which was not realized at all. Does this record give a person, who happens to watch this record 100 years ago, an accurate description of this politician? Of course not. Another reason is that it is easier to modify a video record according to current technology. With the helps of some software, we can even synthesize some video records, which spread fake information. So we cannot totally believe those video records.



Moreover, it is hard to judge which one, video or written record, is more important, for written records have their special features and cannot be replaced by the video records, although video documentation has its advantages mentioned above.


Firstly, we sometimes have to spend more time getting the information needed from the video document. Written notes and sound recorded is a good example to illustrate this point. Suppose a student, who has recorded what the profession has taught both in written words and mp3, is going to take the exam next week, which material he or she will choose? Definitely the notes are the better choice for it is by no means for him to listen to all the sound records again. Because if so, the time he spends equals to all the class time added in the semester. Besides every morning waking up, no one would like to know what our president has said in the council yesterday by listening to the hours-lasting speech again. In this case newspaper, a concise written record of the speech, is qualified to deliver the main idea.


Secondly, written document are more convincing in some cases. We may notice that those leaders always have to sign the document which indicates that they have agreed with it. No one say that “I agree with it “in my speech recorded by all the journalists, and those video records are our official claims.  The reason is that one personal scripture is unique and hard to be copied, while those videos are easier to be synthesized by experts. In the case of official document and commercial contacts, written words are though to be more convincing than the video documents.


All in all, written and video documents have both advantages and disadvantages. Thus it is not proper to say which one is more important than the other. What we should do is to make best use of them and pick the most suitable one for a certain use.
