TOPIC: ARGUMENT38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

In this memo, the arguer recommends that the daily use of Ichthaid derived from fish oil as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism. To justify this claim, the arguer only cites a study showing people rarely visit the doctor in nearby East Meria(RA) where fish consumption is very high. Moreover the arguer says that we can lower absenteeism if people are more immune to cold. This line of reasoning is unconvincing for a couple of reasons.
In the first place, no evidence shows that people in nearby EA will definitely visit the doctor after they have caught cold. So it is entirely possible that people there are more likely take some medicine at home since cold is so popular there that everyone has know how deal with it. Only when the common medicine can not do with some serious cold, people will choose to go to the hospital. So we can not conclude that people there rarely catch cold only judging from the frequency of their visiting hospital.
Even though people there mostly are in good condition, there is not enough evidence to say fish assumption is it that results in their good health. Many other factors can contribute to it. Take the environment for example, it is possible that EA is far from whose industrial cities in that people there maybe benefit from the clean circumstance including clean air, water, and food. Or perhaps it is a trend there to exercise every day which strengths local residents' immunity .Thus it may be the regular exercise rather than fish assumption results in their good health. It is even possible that people have special gene which makes them harder than ordinary people to catch cold. In short, we need more information to eliminate those alternative explanations before we reach the conclusion that there has a cause relationship between fish assumption and cold immune.
Further more, even though we admit that some elements in fish prompt people's immune towards cold, we cannot predict Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, will have the same effect. The arguer does not provide any additional evidence such as medical experiment or expert report to demonstrate Ichthaid has those elements. Perhaps elements do not exist in fish oil at all.
Finally, most people may just use colds as an excuse for their absenteeism. So people will continue to use it no matter if or whether they are more immune to cold than the past. In this case we can not expect to lower absenteeism.
In conclusion, too little evidence offered to support this recommendation. And we need much more information before we accept it.

In the first place, no evidence shows that people in nearby EA will definitely visit the doctor after they have caught cold. So it is entirely possible that people there are more likely to take some medicine at home (take self-medication)since cold is so popular there that everyone has(不要) knows how deal with it. Only when the common medicine can not do with some serious cold(took effect), people will choose to go to the hospital(resort to the doctor). So we can not conclude that people there rarely catch cold only judging from the frequency of their visiting hospital.(理由不太好,在西方国家感冒不是小病不像中国,因为有病毒性感冒可能所以一般会去看医生)
Even though people there mostly are(换个位置) in good condition, there is not enough evidence to say(prelude) fish assumption is it that results in their good health(语法不太对吧). Many other factors can contribute to it. Take the environment for example, it is possible that EA is far from whose industrial cities in that people there maybe(语法也不对) benefit from the clean circumstance including clean air, water, and food. Or perhaps(Maybe) it is a trend there to exercise every day which strengths local residents' immunity .Thus it may be the regular exercise rather than fish assumption results in their good health. It is even possible that people have special genes which make them harder than ordinary people to catch cold(more resistant to colds). In short, we need more information to eliminate those alternative explanations before we reach the conclusion that there has a cause relationship between fish assumption and cold immune.
