ISSUE38
In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.
The speaker claims that reading books is less important than before since people can learn as much by watching television as by reading books. In my opinion, each of them has advantages, and therefore television and books are not capable to win over each other.

Admittedly, television holds decided predominance over books for it is more visual and vivid. It is almost impossible for anyone, no matter how keen an observer and skilled a journalist, to provide a more complete and objective description than television with regard to such events as Ballanchine ballet or the scene of founding ceremony of China in the Tiananmen Square. Moreover, with the video and audio device, television opens a wider horizon for people to realize the world, especially places audiences never visit, which may facilitate their tour. For example, the well-known Family Album U.S.A forms an atmosphere as if we were in America.

However, books are superior to televisions in many respects. First, books are cheaper and easy to purchase. Also they are more portable; they do not need electricity, batteries, signal-receiving equipment and space large enough. Second, as television is radiant, it does harm to eyes if we watch a long time while books do not. Third, the good and bad are intermingled in television programs while books are usually the elites of the precursors.

Another problem with television is that the programs are usually broadcasted at fixed time. The arrangement and schedule of the courses are likely not able to satisfy the need of the majority. Therefore, the passive nature of such medium can render it ineffectual in the learning process. While reading books is an active course where we ourselves can determine what, when and to which extent we want to learn.

Furthermore, for many people it is a pleasurable experience to perusing books since our imagination could fly as the words flow. For example, when reading <Hamlet> of Shakespeare, different people may form different images of Hamlet; while in the film deriving from the literature works, we can see just one, which in fact is just the idea of the owners or managers of the film or teleplay. This blocks and restricts the imagination of viewers.

The speaker also ignores a fact that it is not available for everybody to learn by television; especially for people in poor regions, it is not allowed to do so. Such as some towns of western China, where there is even no electricity, let alone learning through television.

All in all, either of the both has its own advantages and can complement to each other. At this stage, reading books mainly, with the aid of television may be the optimal approach.
