Issue36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
字数:568
Individuals who considered as the great person are by reason of their excellent contribution to human, society and sciences. These persons always possess outstanding talent and intelligence in one or more areas such as politics, arts, sciences and technologies, humanity and so on. Some people hold the opinion that the individuals’ greatness could be only decided by those who live after them, while others deem that the greatness could be realized by their contemporaries. From my point of view, both the contemporaries and the successors can evaluate the greatness of individuals only if they have developed a complete understanding of those individuals.
I concede that the greatness of individuals is most possibly surpass the common cognition of general public and their peers. Their contribution to society can not be considered to be useful or creative by their contemporaries for such an excellent results break through the traditional beliefs and authorities. Take the Copernicus for example, at his times the earth-central theory has predominated for about 1,000 years, so that his sun-central theory after he claimed is got to be opposed for many years by his contemporaries. Instead of being considered as a hero, he was suffered of discrimination and strike by his contemporaries. But after many years of his results, sun-central theory, was approved to be right by Bruno, people are agree with his theory and considered him to be greatness. It is truth that scientific theory always to be proved by experience for uncertain years until one's contribution is well recognized by those who live after them.
However, some times the individuals can be decided to be great by their contemporaries. It is up to the defined standard of greatness. When many people in one field think that one's contribution is big enough to human or society, he may be considered to be a giant. There is no standard to evaluate one person whether he/she is a giant. For instance, Mao Zedong, the founder of People's Republic of China, been considered to be a greatness by his Chinese contemporaries, because of his great contribution in revolution of Chinese freeness. At the middle age of 20 century, Chinese people all of the whole adore him. Until now, he is considered to be greatness by Chinese people. It is because of his great contribution to Chinese liberation, which may be not recognized by the people out of China, but he is the real hero of Chinese. The field of group and the degree of greatness may be fewer than cited before. It is possible to defined one person to be a giant even if the contribution is not big enough but recognized by their contemporaries. For instance, some persons, who are excellent in doing research such as nanometer materials and break through the traditional idea of science, may be considered to be greatness in the field of nanometer materials. Consequently, a giant may be the greatness of some fields or some groups of people.
In conclusion, some greatness of individuals can be decided by those who live after them, other greatness may be decided by their contemporaries. It is up to the evaluating standard of greatness. A person do much great contributions may be considered to be the greatness of whole words by those who live after him/she. But great contributions to certain people or certain field also decide him to be greatness by certain people of their contemporaries. |
