144. "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.



The speaker asserts that it is the artists not the critics contribute to the success of the long lasting arts. I concede that the speaker is on the correct philosophical side of this issue, however, this assertion overstates the role of artists in creation the long lasting works, while in some sense, neglects the indispensability of the critics. For my perspective, artists and critics are supplement to each other in creation invaluably long lasting arts.

Admittedly, the artists play a crucial role to the works which have lasting values and no one can deny that without the artists, no works has been created, not saying being left to the society and lasting values. As we all know, in order to achieve the accomplishment of works of art, an artist who perceives the world with his/her inspiration has to experience many difficulties, such as poverty, isolation from the contemporary people, boring persistence and so forth. Despite these countless difficulties, many artists, such as Von Gough and Picasso, have created many immortal works.

However, without critics, the values of the works created by the artists cannot be found, understood and appreciated by common people. The comments of the critics, whether positive or negative it would be, provide common people the opportunities to focus on the possible value of the arts. For most common people, the works which has true value is above the heads of them at the first glance. For instance, the paint sunflower, one of the most famous impressionist works of Von Gough, would hardly be accepted and appreciated by common people for its unique painting style, and it is the explanation and knowledge given by the critics that enable more and more people understand and appreciate this work.

Moreover, a constructive criticism helps the artists promote their working level and leave the world more valuable arts. The interaction between artists and critics contribute to igniting the inspiration of the artists, and thus they can work more passionate and create better works in the future. This is especially important for a young artist who has no enough accumulation in arts. The constructive comments given by experienced critics will encourage the young artists to achieve a long lasting works.

In the final analysis, although the efforts of artists are significant in creation arts, the vital role of critics in initiation of the long lasting works should not be ignored. The critics can not only help common people to comprehend and appreciate the arts which could be valuable but also benefit the artists to introspect and develop their works which could last for a long time. Both artists and critics give society something of lasting value.
