TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
有保留的反对:在艺术、科学领域中,都有人被当代和后代认可伟大,人们是否认可,取决于其认知水平
1、 艺术:当代人承认的 Da Vinci(疑问:需不需要写他全名阿?)
后代承认的:Van Gogh
2、 科学,特别是物理,缺乏实验支持时,理论是很难被当代人认可的
3、 商业,一般都能认可:Bill Gates
Is the greatness of people only decided in retrospect, by those who live after them rather than their contemporaries, as the speaker claims? In my point of view, whether people can recognize the greatness of individuals depends on the recognizing level, thus the period of recognition of greatness varies from case to case.
Turning first to the realm of art, many people would agree that art, unlike theories which can be affirmed or discredit, the real appreciation of art occurs at the moment people encounter art. It is the emotional impact the art has on our senses and souls that make us to determine the greatness of artist. For instance, when faced the famous work of Da Vinci, such as Mona Lisa's smile, even people at his time were curious about and attracted by the peaceful smile on her face. In other respects, however, people can not evaluate the true value of art created by the artist's impulsion and passion. Take Vincent Van Gogh for example, although today's people place a high value of the works of Van Gogh, people at his time simple despite his works such as Sunflowers which can arouse our emotion today. Thus, in the field of art, it is people's level of appreciation that serves to determine the greatness of individuals. Therefore, these artists can be recognized by the later generations or their contemporaries, or both.
Turning next to the scientific realm, the incubation of greatness of individuals also varies, depending on whether the theories or experiments can be confirmed or repeated. Consider the development in the area of physics. When the wave theory was first made up in physics, most people, including the most distinguished scientists cannot justify the rightness. However, when the experiments of interference were devised and tested by many researchers, people began to regard the wave theory as correct. It is therefore, when theories can not be supported with experiments, the greatness of the individuals who come up with the theories is questionable, while experiments demonstrate their rightness, the individuals' value can be determined most at once.
Notwithstanding the realms of art and science, in the field of business, the inventions' utilization can be thought up almost at the moment the inventions were designed. Thus, the greatness of these inventors or designers can be not only recognized by people who live after them but their contemporaries as well. As we all know, is it Thomas Edison who invent the first light bulb, which is so useful and convenience to provide light at night. Additionally, it is Bill Gates from Microsoft Corporation who devises the DOS and windows operating systems, which not only partly attribute to restore America to the status of the world's powerful economic engine, but also make everyday life of our common people easy and convenience. In a word, as the inventions in business can be applied to improve people's life, the values of these persons can be determined by their contemporaries.
To sum up, the greatness of individuals can be decided both by people who live after them and by their contemporaries. Whether people can realize the values of certain individuals depends on the level of cognition and appreciation. Thus, the speaker unfairly generalized. |
