38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
According to the speaker, reading books becomes less important than it once was in the age of television because watching television enables people to learn as much as they can from books. Although I agree that television provides a more vivid form especially in learning the spatial and audio aspects, there is far more to learn in life than what the television can offer. Thus, the speaker overstates the comparative significance of television as a learning tool.
For the purpose of acquiring the knowledge and experience concerning the spatial and acoustic qualities, I agree that what is shown on the television is usually more vivid, more accurate and more convincing than what is written in books. It is impossible for anyone, no matter how keen an observer and skilled a writer, to recount in complete and objective detail such events as a tornado, hurricane, or volcanic eruption, while the television documentary can convey the immediate power and awe-inspiring nature by displaying them objectively and accurately. A travel brochure cannot inform about the weather, food, hotels, showplaces of a historic site nearly as effectively as the television. A written description of a surgical operation cannot “ replay” the process as precisely and fully as a documentary shown on television. Therefore, when moving images and sounds are central to the learning books are inferior to televisions.
Nonetheless, watching television may affect people especially children in negative ways. First, there exists much unhealthy information uncensored such as violence and pornography on television which will do harm to people’s learning. Although there are books about such information, they are not as available as on television. Secondly, when studying by watching television, people are more likely to be distracted by virtue of a variety of lively and entertaining programs provided by television. Thirdly, apart from effecting people mentally, the frequent use of televisions also has long-term consequences for the health. Physicians have reported symptoms such as obesity and eye-strain in teenagers who began using television at a young age.
On the other hand, reading books are advantageous to people and are even more appropriate than television in some cases. When it comes to learning certain legal matters such as the complex and lengthy terms of the establishment of a trust, televisions cannot display according to the intended pace of reading whereas books can be adjusted to your own. Moreover, people can make notes of any reflections close to the relevant contents in the books, while they cannot do this when studying by television. Additionally, since the books are generally cheaper and smaller than the television, people, whether rich or poor, can take the books with ease wherever and whenever they go and therefore study almost everywhere at any moment.
In sum, the speaker’s claim overstates the importance of television, at least to some extent. When it comes to learning the knowledge pertained to the space and the sound, television are inherently more accurate, objective and complete; however, televisions also have some bad effects on people’s lives. In addition, reading books will always be employed to provide knowledge for us.
