outline: 1. artists are those creat works of aesthetic values. Musicians, painter, sculptor, writer bring aesthetic feelings to us. The inspiration of artists comes from life, and the artists convey our feelings through art. 2. critics are skilled in judging the merits of literature or artistic works. Without them, not all of the artistic works can be enjoyed. A connoisseur gives value to an antique, an adept explains the abstratism or the impressionism to ordinary persons. 3. critics also surpervises the progress that the artist makes Is it the artist rather than the critic, who gives society something of lasting value? The speaker claims so. Yet the speaker overlooks the importance of the critic in our enjoyment of works of art. It is under the cooperation of both the artist and the critic that artistic works gives us lasting value.
Artists are those who create works of aesthetic value so as to convey human being's nature, cravings, as well as to reflect reality of society. Musicians express human feelings through notes; painters convey emotion through paintbrushes; and writers describe the reality of society through pens. During the war time, an encouraging song will inspire people uniting to fight against enemies, and in an oppressed time, a criticism novel is the expression of people's fury towards dominators. The inspiration of art originates from life; meanwhile, artists reflect the real life in artistic forms. Without artists, human being's intellectual life is vacant, which makes our material life amounts to nothing. Therefore, artists do play a crucial role in giving society something of lasting values.
However, we should not neglect the function of the critic in the generation of artistic works. After all, critics are skilled in judging of the merits of literature or artistic works, without whom we may be unable to enjoy artistic works. For instance, but for a connoisseur, we can not distinguish an antique from a counterfeit one, which makes the real one worthless. Another example involves the enjoyment of the works of impressionism or the abstractionism, without the explanation of the critic, most laymen may not understand them, let alone any appreciation of them. To some extent, it is the critic that makes elegant art available and acceptable to ordinary people. Only when people understand and appreciate it, can art mean something. Therefore, the critic are bridges between the artist and the public.
Furthermore, the critic also motivate the artist to improve their works. Similar cases are quite common in literature, where owing to the fastidious critic almost all writers have to amend their works dozens of times before publishing. Yet, it is the critic and the particular demandings that help those ordinary writers grow into language masters with works of perpetual art value. Moreover, the critic may launch a competition among artists so as to stimulate them making progress. Grammy is such an illustration to encourage excellent music makers and advance the development of the whole industry, as well as Oscar promotes the film's development.
In sum, the artist and the critic are complementary for each other. Since the artist are the generators of art, and the critic are the transmitters of art, it is hard to distinguish which is more important in giving society something of lasting value.
第一次写艺术类文章,还真是头痛,抽象,没啥思路,也举不出例子来!
