TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

Is it necessary that all faculty in colleges and universities should spend time on some part-time jobs which are relevant to the courses they teach but outside the academic world? The speaker asserts so, and I agree that on the one hand the teachers in all the applied science fields ought to spend some time working outside the campus in order to get some realistic experiences relating to his academic studies, and then improve the quality of instruction in their classrooms, while on the other hand those who are indulged in pure theoretical studies are really unnecessary to take such part-time jobs.
Firstly, I cannot agree with the speaker any more that the teachers teaching some applied subjects must take some jobs which can help them improve their teaching quality. Let us take the subject of Law as an example. It is hard to imagine that a professor in Law Department is able to guide his students well if he keeps himself blind of the outside world. On the contrary, if he works as a lawyer at the same period, then not only he can make his study intimately connecting with the social needs, but his rich work experiences will also enable him to lead his students to understand thoroughly how the theoretical knowledge about law is used in reality. This can stimulate both the students' studying enthusiasm and their confidence for adapting their jobs at a short time once they enter the society. And we can see that the situation is the same in the subjects of Accounting, Electronic Engineering and so on.
Furthermore, gaining some relevant work experiences can also help the experts who are in the applied science fields combine their theoretical research with the practice and finally change it into productivity, all of which will promote the students to keep in touch with the latest academic study and its utilization in practice, and then help them to start a bright career when they graduate from the universities. The interaction between Stanford University and Silicon Valley is just such a suitable instance. The founding of the Silicon Valley is marked by the birth of the famous HP Company. And HP was set up by two Stanford graduates Hewlett and Parkard with the assistance from the Dean of the Electric Engineering Department Terman in Stanford University, who is considered now as the Father of Silicon Valley. Now all the American universities have begun to establish some kind of friendly relationship with the reputed companies near their campus, on the purpose that their research study will soon become wealth and their students will become more competitive when they are hunting jobs since they have been trainees in these good companies and performed well.
However, we do not have to ask those tutors who only focus their studies in the pure theoretical fields to find some relevant part-time jobs for it will do mere good to their research and their teaching. If we let the famous German philosopher Kant to find a job outside his academic world, it is probable that neither the society was able to offer him a suitable job, nor Kant could do the work well, let alone his students would receive some benefit from his doing so-salled a part-time job. So the researchers in the fields, such as Theoretical Mathematics, Philosophy, Literature Theory and so on, had better remain in their academic world, since their research achievement is limited in theoretical field, but not the applied science field.
In sum, instead of asking all the faculties to do some relevant part-time jobs, we should analyze this question on a case-to-case study. If the professors are teaching in the applied science fields, then it is rather necessary for them to receive some relevant work experience outside the academic world, while those who are just indulged in the theoretical study is naturally free from such a burden.
