issue 103
Whether the study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives as the speaker asserts? In my viewpoint, I agree with the speaker insofar that the study of history indeed brings about important affects to our daily lives, however, studying history also poses positive influence to that beyond our daily lives.
Admittedly, history offers us paragons from which we can learn valuable and excellent attributes, which direct our daily actions and words. Recalling the human history, one would discover that human history is abounded with preeminent figures with admirable attributes. By studying their distinguishing experience and stories, our values would be sharpen and our moral would be strengthen. In a certain sense, these figures have become models of us and influence our daily lives. Take my experience for an example, when I was a child, by studying Edison’s story that after went through hundreds even thousands of experimental failure, he ultimately invented bulb which leads human being into a new “light” era ,I learned how to confront difficulties. Since that, when I went into any trouble, I always remind Edison’s story which encourages me to try my best to overcome difficulties. Similarly, from the famous American president Washington who unites the Continental Army and establish the United States, we learned that determination and strong will are some valuable characters and we should keep them on with us for ever. In short, through studying history, we can distinct virtues from evils, which would give guidance to our day-by-day lives.
However, history also has values on other fields which are not indirect related with our daily lives, such as the development of technology, and advancement of politics. First of all, from the perspective of the achievements of sciences and technology, values of studying history can not be ignored. Each important discovery or breakthrough in science always builds on the former scientific knowledge and research ways. Take the computer science for an example, computer is the creation of combination of the fundamental mathematic and physical knowledge. In order to devise computer, scientists must master abundant mathematical and physical knowledge. Apparently, studying former’s mathematical knowledge is hard to influence to scientists’ ordinarily lives, but it is beneficial to the whole society. Similarly, the invention of steam engine, which emancipates workers from hand-making, is depends on the former mechanical knowledge.
In addition, political leaders gain valuable lessons from significant historical events, especially some events which turn out to be harmful to human civilization. For example, from the documents recording the evils and misdeeds of fascism and militarism, leaderships can learn the great errors and irreversible consequences from these extreme regimes. Also, from the lessons of the Culture Revolution Chinese can learn the fact that all the political policies which can be of true value must meet the current demands of people and any policy neglecting the well-being of citizens is destined to be failure. All in all, the mistakes of history make contemporary leaderships avoid making the same mistakes. This value is also beyond daily lives of leaderships.
To sum up, from what has been discussed, we can safely make this conclusion that the values of studying history is not only limited to our daily lives, but lies in all kinds of aspects of the society including the realm of science , the realm of politics and so on.
