In the following statement, the author suggests that because the most significant events and trends in history were made possible by the groups of the people, the study of history should focus on them whose identities have long been forgotten instead of studying those famous individuals. However, although the majority of the most significant events and trends in history were really made by groups, but that the study of history should put groups the priority is unpractical.

First, in the technical view, it is hard to study so many ordinary people one by one in the history. Some ordinary people’s records were lost after long years and some may even not be recorded. Take the World War Two for example; lots of people were killed by Germany Nazi in concentration camp. I believe that every killed people had a miserable story. However, can we study them one by one to understand the significant event which is about Nazi’s killing? Of course not. It is worthless to spend too much recourse in finding every killed people’s record. We only need to find a few integrated records of people so that we can describe the Nazi’s killing well. The function of the history is to let people know that what happened before, not to record everyone’s history just like the library.

Second, although we admit that the majority of history is made by normal, the contribution made by the great people should not be neglected either. Great people are excellent delegate of ordinary people. From them, we can understand the significant events and trends more thoroughly. When we look back in the event about American Revolution, the courage of American people and the fierce battle against English were really quite appealing. But what attract us most are the great leaders such as George Washington, Franklin and so on. Through studying them, we may know why American can develop so fast that it becomes the most powerful country within 300 years. They are the best annotation of American spirit.

Additionally, I want to mention that more and more people will pay attention to history as studying great people can make history more interesting. The reason is that we often admire and learn a lot from fascination of great person. About two hundred years ago, the army of France conquered almost the whole of Europe and a part of Africa. How could this army be so amazing? Despite the bravery of soldier, the advanced weapon, the most important reason is that they had a talented general, Napoleon. Under his artificial leadership, France army could beat the enemy which had twice number of soldier and spent just 3 months in going across the mountain of Alps in cold winter. When we look at the Napoleon development in all his life, we must be convinced by his talent, diligence and strong will. We also find the answer that France army could be so strong by studying him.

In sum, it is true that groups of people with no identities made the majority of history. But that doesn’t mean we must emphasis on them in the process of studying history. It is better to study great individual, through them we can learn more about great event in history with less cost. And the fascination of great person can be excellent models for people nowadays.
