TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
WORDS: 672 TIME: 0:54:33
Does a public official need to maintain the highest ethical an moral standards in order ot become an effective leader, as the speaker claims? I concede that high ethical and moral standards are desirable for an effective leader, on balance, however, I hold the point of view that merely high ethical and moral standards do not necessarily make a good leader, as I state below.
To begin with, for some leaders in certain areas such as social domain, it is actively proposed, if not necessary for a leader to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. To support the argument, one need only to refer to some figures in the last century, such as Martin Luther King Jr. in America, Gandhi in Indian and Mandela in South Africa as well. No one could possibly deny the factor that all of them were effective leaders in their lifetime or their term of leadership, and that they all equipped with high ethical and moral standards which promote them to fight for the broad benefit for their brothers and sisters of their beloved countries and not their own social and economic benefits an human beings. It is the faith of fulfilling the wish of a country of liberty, equity and justice that makes them effective leaders. Were they not having the highest ethical and moral standards, the situations in America, Indian and South Africa should not change for the better one as they are today.
However, when it come to other areas such as political domain, although high ethical and moral standards are also appreciated, they are not necessary enough to ensure an effective leader. There are more elements that attribute to an effective leader, such as high insight and preeminent ability. For instance, most people regard Bill Clinton as an effective leader, regarding the economic improvement during his terms and the fact that America has restored to the status of economic engine in the world. Besides, turning next to the example of Nixon, before the Watergate scandal was revealed, he was considered a preeminent leader by the mass of people as well. In fact, only equipped with the highest ethical and moral standards lead no support to the conclusion of becoming an good, effective leader as the speaker maintains. What is most, even not being cultivated to maintain the highest ethical standards can also enable a public figure to be an effective one. To look for support for this argument, one needs look no further than Hitler who were largely responsible for the damage of the Second World War. Although what he did is surely not desirable, one cannot deny the fact that he was so "effective" to the extent that he did great harm to almost half of the whole world.
Moreover, when it comes to the realm of technology and innovation, aside from high insight and ability to lead, the leaders are also supposed to have the ability to innovate and to know the effectiveness to communicate with the subordinations. For instance, with highly acute insight, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard University to set up his own business which is known as Microsoft Corporation today. Had he not been equipped the ability to innovate, then we might not have the DOS and Windows systems which are now crucial to the operation of our huge amount of computers today. As for the ability to get along with other coworkers or employees, one can easily get a clear view of the position insofar as one understand that most of the achievements are accomplished not only by the leader but also by the coworkers and employees who are willing to cooperate and work hard.
In the final analysis, I agree with the speaker insofar as it is desirable for a public official who is to be a leader to maintain the highest ethical and moral standards. However, high standard moral and ethics do not make it possible to be an effective leader. Moreover, to be an effective leader one needs also other abilities and qualities. |
