Should society place more attention on reasoning and other cognitive skills as the speaker maintains? In my opinion, in order to ensure the well-being of our society, we should place emphasis on the intellect as well as our emotions and feelings at the same time.

Admittedly, emotions are important for the development of our society, especially when it comes to the realms of arts and science. To support the position, one has to look no further than the Sunflowers painted by Vincent van Gogh. When we encounter this great piece of art, we can almost feel the impulsion when Vincent van Gogh created this wonderful work. Turning next to the example of the work of Notre-Dame de Paris which is a literature in human history. When we are reading the book, we can feel strong impulsion such as anger and happy in ourselves, upon which we recognize the book as a great work worthy our time and attention. It is upon our human beings' emotion that the arts can be developed. When it comes to the realm of science, emotion enable scientists to always be curious about what he or she is studying about, to have the courage to carry on even suffer certain kind of failure.

However, as emotions are products of our inner world, sometimes, we cannot override our base feeling without the help of intellect. For example, some people try to commit suicide because he or she is disappointed in a love affair. How many crimes are committed because of the strong feelings of hate? Revenge can never be solved by means of revenge. Or consider the so-called holy wars that have ever been waged in the human history. All of them could be avoided if the people involved have placed enough emphasis on the intellect. In sum, our emotions can easily gave way to the base feeling such as hate, jealous, lust for power and leadership, thus, we may take some startling actions to express our base feeling regardless of the result. And that is where lay the importance of emphasis on the intellect, which include justice, tolerance, equity, reason, and so forth. Generally speaking, it is by our head not by our heart, that we can ensure the well-being of our society.

Notwithstanding with stated above, emphasis merely on reasoning and other cognitive skills can give rise to some phenomena as well. Consider a person with only intellect but no feelings, he or she might feel it right to have no empathy for the unprivileged. Indeed, only having intellect can lead to a person's dysfunction and even physical illness. So society should place emphasis on the intellect and the emotions at the same time.

To sum up, I fundamentally agree with the speaker that our society should place more emphasis on the reasoning and other cognitive skills, as our sense of liberty, equity can easily give way to base emotions. It is the seamless combination of intellect and emotion that make our human beings human.

With our world mostly based on the development of science and technology, does our society not place enough emphasis on the intellect as the speaker maintains? Concerning all the development and advances made in the past century, however, I cannot help but hold the opinion that our society do place enough emphasis and high value on reasoning and other cognitive skills, as I will state in the realms of education and the improvement of science and technology as below.

Turning first to the realm of education. To begin with, I should make it clear that the education involved here is not just compulsory school attendance, but the development of mental and intellect throughout the growing process of the child as well. Consider, then, when a child see something new, the child probably first observe the new staff, and then may touch it, try to throw away it and even bite it. Though these processes, the child begins to get to know the new staff, and likely to bear the characters in mind so that the next time the child can recognize it the moment he sees it. When he get enrolled in primary school, he receives the knowledge on math, nature science and other courses aimed at cultivate reasoning and cognitive skills that help to develop his intelligence. He may also run into a debate held by school in his school day, which can promote him to think critically and comprehensively. Aside from all these presented above, common sense informs me that our education today can tap the potential ability of the child on reasoning and cognition.

Turning next to the area of the development of science. No one can deny the fact that it is by reasoning and cognition that our science has surge to such a high level as we see today. To support the argument, one needs look no further than the discovery of secrets of our own bodies. Before the discovery of F1-F0 ATPase, scientists had already found that there was a difference of pH between two areas in the cell. To better explain this phenomenon, the scientist came up with the Bonding-change Theory, which is based on the already obtained statistics and evidence and contribute partly to the discovery of the F1-F0 ATPase. Indeed, the revealing process of our own secrecy largely depends upon reasoning and other cognitive skill. Had our society not placed enough emphasis on the intellect, our development of science should not increase so rapidly as it is today.

Moreover, with the invention of integrated circuits comes the innovation of computers and the Internet which both attribute to the improvement of our society today. However, the invention of integrated circuits relies partly on the material and mathematics, which, of course, involve the process of recognizing the usefulness of different materials and requires the ability of calculate and cognition.

To sum up, I fundamentally disagree with the speaker. While the speaker may assumes that our society rely too much on emotions and feelings, however, in my observation, our society has done a great job in cultivating our ability of reasoning and cognition.
