65The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."
In the argument, the author attempts to convince us that the best way to improve profits in all of the stores is to discontinue stocking many of varienties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. To substantiate the recommendation, the author cites the survey that the five best-selling cheeses at their newtest store were domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. However, the survey the author claims is not creditable.
At first, the author cites the evidence that the five best-selling cheeses at their newtest stores were domestic cheeses. However, this evidence is insufficient to establish a general conclusion. Base on a specific example of newtest stores, it is logically unsounded to make suggestion for all the stores. It is entirely possible that in other stores people prefer the imported cheeses. Unless it can be shown that the newtest store is representative for all the stores, any conclusion is unwarranted.
secondly, the author cites a survey that the subscribers of the Cheeses of the world magazine make a increasing performence for dometic cheeses. nevertheless, the survey does not support the assumption well. because the author does not provide any information about the subscribers. In this case, it is highly possible that the subscribers are too little to represent the whole customers. if that,we cannot accept the assumption that all the customers will choose the domestic cheeses but not imported cheeses. Without ruling out any reasons for the assumption, the survey cannot be credible.
In the third place, the author make a assumption that the best-selling cheeses will improve the most profits to the stores. However, there is nearly no relationship between the best-selling cheeses and the most profits. Actually the best-selling cheeses may not bring so many profits, it is highly possible that only because the price of the dometics cheeses is so cheap that many customers choose this. also maybe many customers would think the dometics cheeses are at a bargain price, so they always choose this. So even many customers choose the dometics ones, each dometics ones many case only a little profit. On the another hand, although the imported cheeses are selled so dear and not many people chooce this ones, each imported cheese's profits are so high that imported cheeses cause the most profits. Without the detailed information about the two kinds of cheeses, the assumption is unconvinced.
In conclusion, the author claims that the sores should discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheeses and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. To support this claim, the author makes some assumptions, however, the applicant provides no creadible evidence, to better evaluate the recommendation, I would need more information about the profits of each kinds of
the cheeses.
