TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such non-mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."

观点：不赞成它们对社会所起的作用，弊大于利。
第一让步式承认它们的作用，从安慰人和满足人们探求世界的欲望两个方面来说；
第二说明在安慰人，给人减压方面利弊对比，得出弊大于利；
第三在星象等方面举彗星的例子论证弊大于利。

The speak claims that the astrology, fortune-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits also paly vital role by satisfying people needs. I tend to disagree with this claim. Although they play positive roles by satisfying human needs, fully judged their role, we could see that the negative effect overweight the positive effect, as discussed below.

Admittedly, we first concede that the astrology and future-telling play important role under some special conditions, especially when people feel lonely or helplessly. In front of the uncertain future, people would face infinite choices, which would bring tremendous pressure and scare to people. To get out from these pressure or nightmare, without the help from other people, they have to beg the fortune-teller to give them a determine answer, what his future would be. By this way, he can get the consolation and get back to the normal life. Secondly, these kinds of astrology and future-telling could also satisfy people's appetite for the pursuit of the unknown world. If they are proper used, they are helpful for the scientific development. For instance, the documents of astrology several thousands years ago, help us to identify that the comet is appear in history.

However, the positive effect of the inquiry of these non-mainstream are less than the negative effect. In the first place, although there future-telling consoled us in some degree, it more often make people more depress about the bad future, and more fantastic about these unrealistic future. Then people would not act normally according to their reality. To the society, as most people believe too much about the astrology or future-teller, there would be easy to lead to the conflict between different nations or races.

In the second place, these astrology and paranormal pursuits are unreasoned; they are not based on science. As they take effects on the society, some ridiculous or horrible things would happen. On famous in China is the appearance of comet in 1976, when three famous Chinese political leader---Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and Zhu De died that year. As the astrology says in China, the emergence of comet means very bad things would happen. However, as the explanation of science, we know that these two things have no relationship at all, this kind of astrology only bring tremendous panic to the people.


To sum up, on some degree, astrology, future-telling and psychic and paranormal pursuits play positive role on consoling people, release people from the pressure. However, the negative role they play overweighing than the positive, as discussed above.

这个例子外国人了解的可能性不大，而且对于它的负面影响，也没有充分解释清楚。

题目中还有关于意念和超自然方面的研究，但是文中一点都没有提到，感觉不全面，论述不太能让人信服。
