TOPIC: ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."
提纲:
1.游戏的重要因素还有其他比如声音,情节,语言等
2.新游戏需要the most up to date 电脑,很多人没有买就失去了这样一个市场
3.广告面对的群体不当
4.还有其他因素导致销售量的下降如价格,销售策略等

In this argument, the writer claims that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase for the new games they have just introduced and the advertising campaign. The arguer attempts to substantiate the conclusion by citing the newly conducted survey which indicates that the reason for the decline of the sales and the popular with the latter consumers. The argument ultimately fails as it suffers from several critical fallacies.
First of all ,the writer advocates that the survey indicates that the most important features of a video game is lifelike graphics, and thus overlooks other possibilities such as the music ,the plot ,and the languages, which is also important for a video game ,especially those who pay more attention to the feelings of the games. For instance, if a video game player considers the music as the most crucial factor that attracting him, how come that this video game player would buy this kind of game which emphasize on the lifelike graphic features. In addition, the things that attracts the consumers also conclude the prices, the sales strategies, and features of the video games, if not well conducted which may also strongly lead to the decline of the sales of the video games. But the arguer did not give us any information about this and only turn to other new games, which may step the same way as the current game in sale progress.
Secondly, the newly introduced games require the most up-to-date computers, which will exclude many players who have not get a most up-to-date computer, thus the company will lose a big group of consumers . From the author’s view we easily know that the so-called main players are among 10-25 years old, how come that they would buy a most up-to-date computer just for this game if the have owned a computer just a little inferior to this, and what is more, the most up-to-date computer may cost a big sum of money which may make these young players get into financial problems just for this newly introduced game. So it is hard to say whether the newly introduced games will be big sales.
Thirdly, the company's advertising campaign direct at the young from 10 to 25 years old, and thus make other players who may also like this kind of game and have the ability to buy it, but would think this game are just for children and then be out of the company's supporters. This case just like the example that a slogan says only for children, will an adolescent or an adult buy it, I think the answer will be no need to say clearly, for the arguers’ claim is exactly the same as the this one.
In conclusion, the argument fails to address several weak areas that lead to a rejection of the overall conclusion that the sales will rise. To strengthen the argument, direct causes and effective solutions should be set forth.
