Issue 38 "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Television, which has an important place in mass communication, has a significant role in education with its special position, the way of presentation and qualities peculiar to itself. Concerning the contribution of TV to study, the author asserts that people can learn the same from TV instead of from reading books, no matter in quantity and quality. Thus, reading books does not have the effect like before in the so-called TV-age. This view, in my eyes, is partly reasonable and practical in considering the rapid progress of society, that is, people can learn much from watching television while reading books still plays an significant role in today's situation. To better present my viewpoint let me illustrate it in details.
With the advance development of science and technology, television plays an increasing important role in study and academic field. It is no doubt that TV has obvious advantages in many aspects, such as supporting and enhancing teaching, instructing, summarizing and the forth. Information transferred through of television is different from traditional education methods, like reading books, with respect to the audio-visual presentation. Explanations related to the subject and examples can be presented visually, so the learner gets motivated, his/her desire for learning increases, and therefore learning and remembering become easier. TV is also an effective tool in expressing abstract concepts or ideas. Abstract concepts are usually produced and conveyed with words. Besides this , in making an abstract concept concrete, the role of animation and visual experimentation is very important peculiar to itself comparing to reading books. However, we should not neglect the disadvantages of television at all. One of the important disadvantages is that it does not provide instant feedback. It is too hard to capture the viewers reactions about the program and there would be of partly no effect accordingly.
However, the speaker overlooks several respects in which reading books are inherently superior to watching television. People in a great majority have abundant experiences of reading books for study. There is no doubt that we could understand and master knowledge more profound and accurate through this method. Even though some puzzled questions or misunderstanding of knowledge existed, it is still convenient to be solved in time compared to watching television. In addition, reading also has close relation to judging, thinking and reasoning, while the latter aspects make it easily for us to master the essential points of knowledge.
Moreover, some people like the style of study in reading books or papers instead of watching television, who may think it more effective and rational. In this case, reading books still plays an essential role in learning knowledge rather than having little effect, even in the so-called era of television.
In summary, from all the discussions above, we can safely draw the conclusion that the author's assertion is essentially unreasonable in that reading books is not as important as it once was in the age of television. Admittedly, people can learn much by watching television, thus they should also recognize its disadvantages and combine the alternative advantages of both routes in order to learn more effectively.
