TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
1.电视的确有它的优势
2.但电视的主要用途不是学习
3.书本也有许多电视没有的优点
Is reading books not as significant as it once was, in the age of television? Admittedly, television can provide a more vivid picture with various sounds which book can not. But regarding the convenience and portable of book and the use of television, it is still not able to take the place of book.
There is no doubt that television has some merits which book does not have, such as lively picture and really voice. In fact, this is the aim of designing the television, to supply the functions which books failed to. These surely will give a more direct viewing of the world. Take cooking for example, there are various cooking books we can find in the library, but no matter how exactly the book is, it is not able to offer a lively description of the whole procedure. Cooking books are more easily to give difficulty to the reader, such as a spoon of salt and slow fire. Different people have different comprehensions, and it may lead to different results. Television, however, can provide a more accurate process with image and voice information; undoubtedly, it is more than likely viewers are able to cooking a delicious dish. Not just cooking, television performs better in nearly any field which has to do with operation, like experiment and designing. In a word, television is an effective way of learning in some certain field.
Although televisions have lots of advantages which books do not possess, it is more likely that the main use of televisions is to amuse, which means to kill time. We can see it from the channels on TV set. Most of the programs are planned to amusing people. It is no easy to find a program of education on the television, much more to learn. For instance, it is hardly impossible, if any, for people who are fascinated with certain animal to find a channel about it. Even the channel is found, the information provided on it may not the one people need. In fact, it is not hard to realize such situation. The chief aim of television is to get a profit; therefore, to achieving the aim the manager of television station will try to raise the number of its spectators to the greatest extent. In other words, education is not taken into account by the manager; then the lack of study channel is not strange. Also, some of the programs displayed on the television are full of violence and pornography, which certainly make a serious influence to the youth. I had heard a piece of news recently which said a child died from imitating the execution of SDM after watching the procedure for more than ten times. In short, considering the aim of displaying programs and the harm it may bring to the youth, television is more appropriate for entertainment.
Moreover, books have its own merits as well, such as handiness and moveable. People can read a book in almost anywhere, not just in the classroom, but also outside and in any time when they want. But the television, however, is limited by the electric source and the heaviness of its own. People are initiative when reading a book; they can go out for a walk when they feel tired. While watching a program on the television, there is practically no chance to have a rest, since any stop means the missing of some information. It is almost impossible, if any, for a people to concentrate on the program for a long time. Also, education is a process between teacher and students, without such interaction, it is not a complete procedure. At this point, television is not capable enough to take place of books.
In sum, television has some advantages which books cannot compare with when it comes to do with the real operation. But carefully examining the whole characteristics of each way, as the convenience and portable of books, it is still more suitable for learning. |
