第一次限时的阿狗,真的是一塌糊涂,大家使劲拍吧。。。:funk:
TOPIC: ARGUMENT51 - The following appearedin a medical newsletter.
"Doctors have long suspected thatsecondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severemuscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of astudy of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treatedfor muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sportsmedicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Theirrecuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected.Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a generalphysician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they weretaking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantlyreduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would bewell advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

In this argument, the author concludes thatall patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain should take antibiotics toheal quickly in respect of two groups experiments. At the first glance, author's reasoning seems logical, while clearly examining the reasoning; we mayfind some flaws as follow.
To begin with, author asserts that allpatients who have muscle strain have to take antibiotics; meanwhile, doctors'suspects are that some patient who have severe muscle strain can heal quicklyprobably. Obviously, author is ambiguous about the meaning between some andall. Doctors' statement only stand for a tiny proportion of a whole group, whoill with muscle strain, we should not be so sure about the conclusion that thewhole group are fit for the treatment as same as the single severe one.
Further, author has no evidence to supportthe assertion that every patient, who have muscle strain, should treated assevere ones. Many people, includingmyself, believe that it is totally different about ordinary and severe. Asimple example can illustrate this statement profoundly. A person, who catchesan ordinary cold, cannot treat as a person who has severe cardiopathy. Similarly,we should not put severe and common patient together.
Moreover, the experiment which proved bytwo groups of people have no capability to support author's conclusion.Firstly, author gives no information about the two types of patient. Secondly,we get no idea about how long does this experiment lasts. As we know, it cannotconvince public if a experiment only lasts a few time. Thirdly, the conditionof these two doctors is totally differently. Dr. Newland is a specializeddoctor in sport medicine; at the same time, Dr. Alton is a general physician. We have to suspect about the result of one symptom diagnosed by two kinds ofdoctor.
To draw a conclusion, author’s assertioncannot convince us unless author can provide detail information about twogroups of patients, the experience of two doctors and scientific evidence aboutdoctor’s suspect. |
