TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

In this argument the arguer claims that the advertisement given by the dentist to attract patients should target the male and empasize the effectiveness of anesthetic techniques and the seseitivity of their staff. For the stastics collected from dentist which indicate a three times more faint men than women.But the arguer fails for the fallacies as follows.

First, the arguer commits a fallacy of treating the vague data ,that three times more male than female faint while dealing with their dent illness,as a credibile result,and makes further assumption that the men patients are more sensitive than the women . But the arguer overlooks that that statistics just a phenomenon of the men who cannot bear the pain. How about the left part of men ? If they can still better endure this than the women dent patients and the following assumption will be incredible.

Second, the arguer does not consider that the difference between the male and female when visiting a dentist. If the women patients tell the dentist that they cannot withstand the ache and thus have the pills given by the dentists to stop pain ,but the male patients do not do this. Thus ,the number of the male patients faint of course will be much more than the female patients. But that is not the truth of the person's ability to withstand the pain. In addition, the other alternative of this is that the pain the women can withstand is the same as the man ,but they faint fewer ,because the difference between the man and woman ,which also make the stastics and the argument unconvincing.

Third, the arguer make a mistake of hasty generalization.Seeing the stastics, the arguer assumpted that the advertisment should aim at the male patients and emphasize the advantages of the dentists. But as mentioned above,the arguer fails to anaylise the alternatives of the explaination of the stastics why the men are women faint before the dentists,may the number of women are much more than the men after the pills taken to stop pain.Thus the advertisement may not have any attractive to the women patients,and as a result the women will not go to the dentists for they think it just for male.

In sum, this argument does not reason well for the weak points mentioned above. If other effective causes and solutions be given ,the argument may be better.
