51"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
According to the speaker, education will not be effective unless it is specifically designed to satisfy the needs and interests of each individual. I concede that different people, due to different backgrounds and abilities, may develop different characteristics when they are at school. For this reason, education is responsible for helping its students to exploit their tremendous aptitudes. Otherwise, I tend to disagree with the speaker's claim in that it is difficult for education to answer the needs of each student and education will also be effective when it provides the same courses for all the students whether they are interested in those courses or not.
To begin with, education, aiming to meet the individual needs, will prove truly effective for it plays a vital role in shaping the personalities which may be varied among the individual students. In no school can there even be a class of identical ability, and there is a divergence-that is, students will have different needs and interests. If the gifted students who are greatly superior to their peers were to accept the education which is not specifically tailored for them, their talents would not be fully developed and even be hampered. On the other hand, assuming that they accept the education fit for their abilities while different from others, they would be inclined to succeed more easily and more quickly than others did. Accordingly, education will be of effectiveness when it is planned to meet the individual needs.
However, the speaker’s assertion fundamentally violates my intuition. Since almost each individual will receive education and there are limited schools and teachers all over the world, it is not easy that education will be discover the individual needs and interests of all the students during their school time. In most cases, many, if not most, students have to attend the compulsory lessons, which are designed for the majority rather than the specific individual, such as language, computer and so on. Although the students who receive the same courses may have different needs and interests that cannot be met, it is necessary for them to acquire the knowledge given by these lessons, because only when the majority of students are required to study certain courses can the standard examination concerning these courses exist, which is useful to select candidates qualified for further studies or jobs. Moreover, these courses can usually equip the students with basic skills which will be necessitated in the society and help students well-prepared for the jobs.
By and large, education will be still effective when it is not specifically intended to meet the individual interests but to satisfy the needs of the majority and the demands of society. Nevertheless, apart from these required curriculum for most students, there should exist some optional courses for the individual students to pick so that the specific needs and interests of some peculiar students could be satisfied. |
