Who determine the most significant events and trends in history? The speaker claims that it is the groups of people rather than the famous individuals who have the profound influences to the development of history, so that the study should place more emphasis on the former instead of the latter. From my perspective, it is true that groups of people are fundamental to the growing of society; however, the importance of the famous few is outweigh the groups of people when it comes to the most historic moments and events, which makes it reasonable to emphasis individuals in the studying of history.

Admittedly, groups of people are indispensable to accelerate the process of history. Simply put the Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders in the world, as an example. In order to construct the Great Wall, hundreds of thousands of common people devote their wisdoms, efforts, youth, and even the most precious lives. It is not an overstatement that the Great Wall will not exist without the dedication of all the common people. In one word, groups of people do make great contribution to the development of society.

However, on the other hand, the famous few are of more significance to upgrade the society for the unique ability they have, such as leadership and judgment, which is crucial to the victory. Lincoln is a proper example to sustain my viewpoint. As the president of the United States in 16 century, Lincoln led the Union during the Civil War and emancipated the slaves in the south. During such an urgent moment in the history, the unorganized struggling of slaves will easily be suppressed by the strong enemies. Hence, it seems clearly that a key individual is to a large extent decide the results of some events in the history as well as the trends of where the history towards.

In addition, putting emphasis on the key individuals in the process of studying history has its advantages which are neglected by the speakers. First, it is easier for students to remember a significant historic event by appreciating the concrete key figure rather than by the groups of people. Second, setting the outstanding individuals for role models is beneficial for students to grow up as more favorable and useful person. For example, from Martin Luther King, students learn how to cling to the belief inside them and never give up during the pursuing of one’s dream. Also, the key individuals are the reflection of the society in their times, learning the famous few is indeed helpful for students to understand the character of that time and the trends of history as well. Therefore, stress the key individuals is not adverse to the purpose of studying history.

All in all, in my point of view, although history will hardly progress without the contribution of groups of people; however, the famous few has far more to do with the most significant events and trends in history which makes it rational to place emphasis on the key individuals while studying history.
