TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Television, which is a modern appliance, no doubt has become very necessary in today' life. Some people assert that people can learn much from the TV programs, and the books would be less important. We could see that, in today's life book is still one of the most important way to study and get information, television only can be the supplement of the book.

Admittedly, we can not deny that television give us a convenient way to get more information. Because of television, we can easily know what happened every day in the world; we need not go outside to see the beautiful view in other place or other countries. And TV also provides us many programs for entertainment. TV show us the world in a vivid way that the books can not give us.

But television can not give much things to think deeply. We only can see the surface of the things from TV and don't have spare time to think, therefor TV can not provide us more things to deeply think about. For instance, we could see a TV play rewritten from the famous novel, we could know what happened in the play, but it is difficult for the audience to understand the deep idea that the author want to show. TV is better for us to entertain than to study.

Book, the traditional way people to get information, still has significant meaning for people in the age of television. First, it is the most effective way to study by book. book could give us knowledge directly, easily to be accepted. For example, when we study physics, the book can show us the theory in the simplest sentences, we can understand it easily. If we want to review it, we can easily find it. Second, book is the best way to show the spirit of the author and teach us to think. This is why people always want to read the original work. Third, book is easy to take, and this make that it is more convenient to read book in some place.  We can only watch television when we are at home or place where there is a television there. When we go outside, get on the bus, take a train, or travel by plane, we can easily take a books by us. Book become the best way to get information in these situations. So we can not say that book is less important now.

The best way for television is to be a useful supplement of books. On one hand books give us most knowledge and information. On the other hand, TV show us news some instant information.

There are many other aspects to support my view, unfortunately, I don't have enough time to explain in detail. But what I discussed above could fully justify my view that in the age of television book is still very important way for us to get information and study, we learn most from books and TV can only be a supplement to get information.
