Ideas and values of a society can express themselves through several ways such as its external politic status, its arts, its history and its culture. Especially, there is an intimate correlation between a society’s ideas and values and the way its people look, dress, and act. Then we could make a prediction of a society by just observing the appearance and behavior of its people.

External appearance reveals internal attitudes. This is an old saying. The way how people decorate themselves including what people dress is always a colorful flag which contains its own characters changing with different times and different areas. For example, in Dynasty Qing in China, women often weared a lot of bright colored clothes and had every inch of skin under protection. This is a character of old thought and conventional views of sex. And then in the China’s civil war times, the female soldiers loved to dress in uniform greens and had their hair neatly locked behind ears. And this is a manifestation of unity and enthusiasm of objecting to the old government. And now, we all dress ourselves in more leisurely clothes (jeans, Tshirts, etc), which acts as our own stamps more than protection from cold. This dress current shows our society has entered an opener times and people pay more attention to individual character. Therefore, what people wear could show the improvements of society’s culture and politics. Moreover, it could show cultural differences between distinct areas. We can all realize Arab’s special attitude to women through their special wear; we can also enjoy French’s romance through their leisure and beautiful wear; we taste American’s openness through what they wear too. In a word, different people’s different appearance can honestly tell us something- that is different society.

Besides appearances, we can figure out people’s attitudes and interests more easily from their behavior, and then we can further figure out the society’s values and ideas. If we could see people voluntarily look after the old, the children, the pregnant in buses; if we could see on streets people consciously pick up rubbish on the road- side; if we could see people stand in queue in restaurants waiting for seats, we can certainly come to a conclusion that this society is well-educated and cultured. Compared to the appearance of people, what people do is a more obvious way that betrays their minds and lets people know about them.

All in all, I agree with this view that we can see the large from the small, and that observing what people dress and how they behave is a good way to know about the society.
