TOPIC:ISSUE7 - "The video camera provides such an accurate and convincing recordof contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentationthan written records."
WORDS:610          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-3-11

Does the video camera supply such anaccurate and convincing record of present life that it has been a much morevital form of documentation than written records, as the speaker claims? Iagree with the assertion of the speaker insofar as the video camera is indeed providingadvantages over written records in most cases. However, the speaker unnecessaryextends its assertion to all the circumstances, including some circumstances where the video camera is not soaccurate and convincing.

The video camera can provide image andsound record of contemporary life for us, whichmakes it possible that we are able to have a more accurate image in the processof understanding. For supporting examples, one need look no further than the programs on television. It is so manyprograms that can bring the contemporary people a great deal of informativenews and stories with sound and images, which are about the events andlocations far away from us. Therefore, the video camera has produced manychanges in our life and the realm of our knowledge.

Besides, the video camera gives us theopportunities that we can use the video camera rememberthe important affairs and moments in our precious life. For instance, agreat number of students keep the video data or files about their universityand the last few days with their friends on the campus. They will watch themfrom time to time to enjoy the happy time which has been passed away. If thereis no the video camera, the wishes that they hope to call back the days in theuniversity cannot be achieved. Though they could look at the diary written inthat days, the feelings , needless to say, can not be compared with thefeelings to watch the video files with images and sound which can help us to goto that days as we really go back. Thus, the video camera is playing an importantpart in our time.

One the other hand, under certaincircumstances the situations are not so comfortable for us due to thedisadvantages of the technology itself.

In that the video camera should be operatedwith some knowledges(techniques) which are difficult for some senior people tolearn and remember. Thus, the written recordsare still the main method for them to record their own life and the eventsimportant for them. What is more, if we desire to get a video record, we mustplan the whole process and must bring the video camera on us. It is indeed notconvenient for the life under great pressures which make us be inclined toforget something trivial some time.Consequently, we will have the regret that the video records are not available, and we will record the memory or feelings in the written form instead. Fromthis point, the written records are still the important part for thecontemporary life.

Along with the development of technologyand the explosion of information, huge number of people can cut and glue thevideo files with their own computer and the software downloaded from theInternet, with which some individuals fabricate some video files, such as thescandals about the famous recreational and sport stars, to propagate the wronginformation to the public. Thus, we cannot believe all the news and theinformation on the Internet which could be not so convincing and accurate.

On the whole, the video camera is indeedchanging our life nowadays, but in some cases they could misleading the publicand could also be not convenient for use aswritten records. Therefore, the written records are still playing an importantrole in our life.

TOPIC:ARGUMENT131 - The following appeared in an environmental newsletter publishedin Tria Island.

"Themarine sanctuary on Tria Island was established toprotect certain marine mammals. Its regulations ban dumping and offshore oildrilling within 20 miles of Tria, but fishing is not banned. Currently manyfish populations in Tria's waters are declining, a situation blamed onpollution. In contrast, the marine sanctuary on Omni Islandhas regulations that ban dumping, offshore oil drilling, and fishing within 10miles of Omni and Omni reports no significant decline in its fish populations.Clearly, the decline in fish populations in Tria's waters is the result ofoverfishing, not pollution. Therefore, the best way to restore Tria's fishpopulations and to protect all of Tria's marine wildlife is to abandon ourregulations and adopt those of Omni."
WORDS:438          TIME: 0:30:00          DATE: 2007-3-11

The arguer claims that to restore the fishpopulation in Tira(T) and protect all of T's marine wildlife, the best way isto adopt the regulations of Omni(O). To justify the conclusion the arguerpresents regulations in T and O by comparison, and the result of the comparisonshows that overfishing is the major problem in T. However, the assumption aboutthe correlations between pollution and marinemammals are dubious on some grounds, rendering the argument unpersuasive as itstands.

First of all, the arguer unfairly assumesthat the similarities between O and T are sufficient to draw the conclusionabout the regulation. However, the scant similarities are enough due to a greatnumber of possibilities. It is entirely possible that the number of fish in Tis much more than O, though there is a decrease in number of fish in T. It isalso possible that O takes some other measures besides the regulation T knows. And, in that the location and the condition of nature in T and O is notpresented by the arguer, it is not reasonable for us to believe the number offish in T will increase evidently as the arguer assumes. Thus, the arguershould provide more information about O's condition of water and the naturebefore the final decision.

Next point, the assumption about 20 milesof T should be decrease to 10 miles due to the overfishing is unconvincing.Perhaps, in the areas between 10 miles and 20 miles of O there are lots ofpeople fishing. Or perhaps, the resource of pollution is out of 20 miles in T.And, the decrease is indeed resulted from the pollution. Therefore, moreevidence about the situation of T and O should be presented and it is notnecessary for T to adopt O's regulation blindly.

Last but not least, the study is about thenumber of fish, but marine mammals are not only fish. Thus, it is not properfor T to protect the fish with the O's regulation, lacking the evidence that theregulation can be effective to protect the marine mammals in T. And, thesituation of marine mammals in O and T does not be provided for us, it is notpersuasive for us to accept the assumption that the regulation can be effectivefor T. Perhaps, there are better regulations for T to protect the marine mammals.

To sum up, the argument is indeed logicalunsound with the existing evidence and the flawed comparison between O and T.To better assess it, the arguer must demonstrate more information about thesituation of water and pollution in T and O.
