I concede that some nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits can satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. However, it is presumptuous to claim that these nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in society.  In my opinion, the harm they can bring to their participant far outweighs the benefit they can afford.

Admittedly, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry could satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. When people faced discomposure, dread and regret, they often ascribe all the misfortune they suffered to the destiny. Since, this kind of thought could calm down people's temper, these nonmainstream areas could play their positive roles to people and society. For example, some nonmainstream claim that all lives are sons of God, no one has the power to take them off including oneself. This belief could give courage to the despondent people and encourage them fight to the environment.

However, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry could not play a vital role in society, since that it is only production which can play a vital role in society, or our society will be plunged into panic and confusion. Let us take an assumption that if all people in society believe in these nonmainstream, they would not make any effort to improve their lives. Students would not learn hard because they believe that the grade in test is doomed, making great efforts on their lessons would not generate any benefit to the final. Patients would not cooperate with doctors for their treat since they consider that the time every one dies is determined by God and the treat could not prolong their lives. When people meet frustration or misfortune, they may not try their best to solve the problems that throw them in the dilemma but turn to astrology or fortune-telling for help. Chance would never show appearance for the people did not prepare. They could see no way out of the predicament they were in.

Moreover, it is mainstream areas such as science, industry, phylosophy make progress for our society. Science could settle puzzles and find new techniques which improve the efficiency of production. As is known to all, it is computer science accelerates the speed of compution, strengthens the processing ability, improves the extent of automation in all kinds of field, and lightens the burden of workers. The renovation of traffics owes to the development of industry. Modern life is more and more convenient and fast because of modern traffics such as plane, train, and automobile. The appearance of mobilephone abbreviates the distance between sweet heart, kindreds, and colleaguse. The nonmainstream areas of inquiry could not do any help for all these progresses.

To sum up, I agree with the speaker insofar as a theory that some nonmainstream areas could satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. Nevertheless, the nonmainstream areas could not instead of mainstream science to play a vital role in society.
