TOPIC:ISSUE44 - "Government should not fund any scientific research whoseconsequences, either medical or ethical, are unclear."
WORDS:582 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2007-3-17
Should government fund any scientificresearch of which consequences, either medical or ethical, are not clear, asthe speaker claims? I concede with the assertion of the speaker insofar as manyscientific researches are under debate in the public and there aresignificantly medical or ethical problems about the researches, such as humancloning and genetic engineering. However, government should not, under allcircumstances, restrict such scientific researches, even though government doesnot financially support the scientific researches.
The scientific research whose consequences, either medical or ethical, are unclear cause widely public concerns and controversy in that the pubic think that thescientific researches, such as human cloning and genetic engineering, canresult in the disaster for our modern society and the world as a whole. Afterall, no one individual can accept the fact that there is another person who lookslike him or her, and thereby can obtain what he or she can obtain. What ismore, our society will encounter a great problem about the moral standard becausewe cannot judge whether the person from human cloning technique can receive thehuman right and the societal status. Therefore, the societal panic about thecloning persons is reasonable and practical, and government indeed should(漏掉了这个词,总是习惯性的呢:() place some restriction on the scientific researches about thecloning.
On the other hand, along with thedevelopment of economy and technology, there are more and more changes cominginto our life which bring about impacts on our knowledge and moral standard. Itis not sensible for the government to forbid allthe scientific researches whose consequences are unclear in the medical andethical aspects.
The scientific researches of human cloningcan bring the modern society a great number of benefits though there are some critiques(竟然有复数形式,被打败了) in nowadays society. No one can deny the fact that hundreds ofyears ago the equal rights between man and woman are objected by many countriesand areas due to some old traditional thoughts. However, we can accept thephenomena about the sex rights and we greatly opposite the sex discriminationin modern time. Thus, the scientific researches, as the case may be, areinvolved in the same situation. In that theadvantages the human cloning bring us far overweigh the disadvantages, thepublic will be bound to accept in some later time if the government take some specific measures to restrict theapplications which are not so moral that the pubic cannot understand in presenttime.
Besides, the scientific researches aboutthe genetic engineering is also controversial bymany people and governments in that the genetic engineering will change thenature of human which is presented by the creator, and there are a great numberof religious communities in favor of this kind of ideas. It is true that thegenetic condition will be changed by the genetic engineering. However ourquality of life ,in fact, will be significantly improved by the technique andthe degenerated organ could be replaced with another organ that can be obtainedby the genetic technique. Consequently, the average age of human could beimproved greatly after the application of the genetic technique. Needless tosay, the consequences are the aims which governments, with huge amounts ofproblems about citizens' health, are desiring to achieve.
On the whole, the consequence of somescientific researches indeed cannot be accepted by the public in present time.Nevertheless, the advantages the scientific researches will bring us cangreatly benefic human in the future time when there are changes in public thoughts. Therefore, the government should bein favor of some scientific researches, in a qualified sense, for the long-runbenefit.
