The speaker asserts that all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level. Admittedly, the students of some subjects, such as engineering, do gain certain benefit if their teachers spending time working outside. However, when it comes to pure Mathematics and Chemistry, the condition would be completely different. Therefore, I strongly disagree with the speaker's viewpoint.
既然开头是有保留的反对,为什么要用strongly这么强烈倾向性的词呢?
In the first place stands some subjects including engineering, of which the faculty spending time working outside the academic field in professions relevant to the courses they teach would be greatly beneficial to their students. Such subjects as engineering have something to do with experience, which is important for anyone in these fields to work well. If the teachers in these fields are able to work outside to experience more, they would understand more about the pure knowledge they teach in class, and can help their students to perceive the profound theories. At the same time, when the students graduate to work, it would of great help for them to get along well with the work quickly, which can give them more confidence and would work more hard than those who only know pure theories and feel difficult to put them into practice. Accordingly, the faculty in such subjects as engineering should be encouraged to work outside of their field to improve the quality of instruction.

Notwithstanding, there are some subjects demanding both teachers and students to do theory study. Take mathematics and chemistry for example. It is not other reasons but the character and feature of these subjects determine that faculty's working outside their field would be spare time. As we all know, these subjects have little to do with working experience, but have everything to do with calculating or doing exercise and the like. Thus, in order to improve the quality of instruction, the best way towards teachers is to learn more and understand more about their field and to be more qualified to teach students.

Nevertheless, those teachers who work outside their fields, should strike a balance towards working outside and teaching students. For sake of improving the quality of instruction, they walk out of school. However, if they spend too much time and spirit on the outside work, it would be difficult for them to promise to teach qualifiedly. What is more, students would be the ultimate victims, and the initial purpose to improve the quality of instruction would be undermined. Thus, some faculty should do certain not overdue work outside their field to gain experience to help them teaching.
平衡实践时间
To sum up, from what have been discussed above, we may safely draw a conclusion that some faculty should go out of college and university to experience much to improve the quality of instruction, while some others not. Furthermore, those who work outside their field should strike a balance in teaching and working.
