The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper.
'The members of the town school board should not be reelected because they are not concerned about promoting high-quality education in the arts in our local schools. For example, student participation in the high school drama club has been declining steadily, and this year the school board refused to renew the contract of the drama director, even though he had received many awards for his original plays. Meanwhile, over $300,000 of the high school budget goes to athletic programs, and the head football coach is now the highest-paid member of the teaching staff.'

Even evidence the author provides are obvious, it is less convincing. Moreover, the analysis of his assertion that the member of the town school board should not be reelected because they are not concerned about promoting high-quality education in the arts in our local schools is little reasonable and less causable.

To begin with, the example that student participation in the high school drama club has been declining steadily do unnecessarily indicate that the town school board do not take care of art. On the one hand, the drama club is not anything about art that student can take part in. Except drama club, also students can join in dancing, drawing, and the like. Perhaps the students participating in other artistic places are extremely adequate compared with those in drama club. On the other hand, even the students in all artistic realms are declining steadily, also it has little to do with the concern of the town school board. Aside from the town school board, there are also many other factors that can cause the declination. For example, the total number of the town school is declination because there may be some other school established in other nearest town which has been interesting for many students make the students tend to such new schools. Without sound evidence to ruling out such cases, the assertion cannot be convincing any more.

Besides, the decision of refusing to renew the contract of the drama director which had receives many awards for his original plays cannot be as cogent evidence to support the reason that the town school board is not concerned about promoting high-quality education in the arts. Perhaps there are the drama director is entirely unsuitable for the students of our town and his original plays do little effects on the interests of students which is also possible the reason why students declining in the club. Or perhaps there are some other drama directors which are better than this one. And with such considering, the broad then give such refusing. If so, how can we think the broad do little concern on the art?

Moreover, the  over $300,000 of the high school budget going to athletic programs and the head football coach being now the highest-paid member of the teaching staff also is little indication of the reason not reelecting the town school board. First the school budget over $300,000 going to athletic programs does not mean that the board put all budget on such programs, perhaps the budget on art is further more than it on athletic programs. Second, the head football coach being paid highest cannot be used to compare with the art. Perhaps most of the art clubs are free in the town. And even not considering such case, may the income of the member in between the football coach and drama club are more or less the same, and just the latter is $1,200 a month and the former $1,250 which only is higher by $50 as a little part of their income.

Furthermore, the causal relationship of the not concerning of art and not reelecting the town school board is great vague. What are the broad’s duties? Dose the promoting in art be the only ones, and athlete or study not?  Or is it sure that promoting in art is the necessary duty? These entire questions cannot give a clear answer by the author, then how can he give such an assertion with rational analysis?

In sum, the author should give more evidence to support his assertion. Only the provided evidence does little support with his assertion.
