140.  The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Peofessor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University foe another college."

分析:
1)首先T教授的教学和研究能力没有被证实,所以加薪提升是无理要求
   a: 她的班级是最大之一,如果大班授课是这所大学的特点呢?就算他教的学生多,那也不能得出她的受欢迎度高啊,万一这是学校规定的一门必修课呢?如果她的学生的出席率很低呢?而且好多人投诉校长要换老师因为她讲课太枯燥了...这样还说他的教学水平高吗?
   b: 她的年薪本来就不高,如果她带来的研究捐助刚刚盖过她的年薪呢?还有,是不是学校有政策要求教授要每年必须给学校带来多少的捐助呢?她有没有完成任务呢?其他的教授带来的捐助更高...而且更重要的是 带来的捐助并不能与她的科研水平相提并论,她文章发表多少?参加了多少国际化的研讨会?
2)无理假说,仅仅因为不加薪不提升,T教授要离开吗?如果要走,早就走了吧?17年了,她的生活已经稳定化了,如果换工作,她的家庭将不好搞啊。

Is Professor Thomas a qualified professor? Does she have excellent research abilities? Will she leave for another college to teach? In my observation, the author fails to answer these questions but provides circular answers. Thus, we have good reason that the recommendation is unwelcome.

To begin with, whether the mere fact, I wonder, that her classes are among the largest at the university can demonstrate her popularity among students. If nearly all classes in this university are as large as hers, which is a feature of this university. Can we say that all professors are popular among students? In addition, perhaps the students of her classes are often absent because of her boring classes, and many students ever write to President to ask to change teachers. If these are true, does author still say Professor Thomas is a qualified teacher?

Furthermore, the money brought in research grants by Professor Thomas fails to stand for her research abilities. Maybe it is the university's regulation that all professors should bring money in, and the demanded money may be more than what she brought in. In this respect, she fails to fulfill her task. Maybe the university has mercy on her as her 17 years' service, and does not fire her.  Even assuming she does well in this respect of bring money in, is this stand for her research abilities? Common sense informs us that the professors' abilities have to do with whether they find new theory, how many qualified paper are published by them, and how many international conferences in their field they attend. Unfortunately, according to the information alone provided by author, I cannot get conclusion that Professor Thomas has high research abilities.

Even if Professor Thomas is a qualified teacher and has high research abilities, there is still no good excuse for us to raise her salary and to promote her as Department Chairperson. No evidence supplied that she will leave for another college to teach.  She has work in this university for 17 years, and is familiar with the environment she works in. And it is entirely possible that her home is nearby the university. If she changes job, she has to move home, which determined not by her alone but also her families, is rather a trouble thing. In that case, “she will leave Elm City University for another college” is merely a rumor, and deserves no attention.

In conclusion, whether to raise Professor Thomas’ salary and to promote her involves many factors, which is not as easy as the author asserts. Thus, a series of surveys about her should be called to provide us sufficient evidence, then, it is not late for us to answer the foregoing question.

 1. her classes are among the largest at the univeristy 不等于他上课上的好...
   可能他的学院是全校最大的,而学院的这门必修课只有他一个人教...所以...
 2. the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in e ach of the last two years.
 可能学校平均的research grants 是$20,000比他的多一倍...所以
2. 就是Prof.T好,没有证据证明我们要害怕他离开我们
 可能T对学校很忠诚,T的GL也在我们学校....
3. 即时T有可能要走,也不一定能通过加钱,升官来...
    可能对方加到¥30,000,对方让她当院长...
...

Maybe the university has mercy on her as her 17 years' service, and does not fire her.  Even assuming she does well in this respect of bring(bringing) money in, is this stand for(怪怪的) her research abilities? Common sense informs us that the professors' abilities have to do with whether they find new theory, how many qualified paper(papers) are published by them(by them可以去掉), and how many international conferences in their field they attend(have attended). Unfortunately, according to the information alone provided by author, I cannot get conclusion that Professor Thomas has high research abilities.
