The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.'Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read costs only $500 per employee—a small price to pay when you consider the benefits to Acme. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course.' ------正文------I had to worry about the future of the personnel director and the company if it adopts such recommendation that Acme should require all of the employees to take the Easy Read course (ER) and would benefit greatly by such measure. But, he overlooks something important: whether to operate some measure depends on three points--what the company needs, whether the measure can satisfy such needs, and whether the company can afford for such measure. Here, any evidence is provided for these points.First of all, what does the company need? Is it the speed-reading condition? Is it real that the productivity of the Acme is hindered by the speed-reading condition? From the argument, nothing relative can be found. Lacking such evidence, it is extremely possible that the employees are of great reading speed and the Acme does not need any Easy Read course. If so, to operate such measure is only a waste of money and energy(gain) but nothing. In short, even many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the course has greatly improved productivity, still the Acme have no reason to do the same thing without such needs.Secondly, even assuming that the company is really in trouble of speed-reading condition, could the measure taking Easy Read Speed-Reading Course satisfy such needs? Or does such course is really effective in improving the reading speed. Maybe the director gives much evidence for illustrating such question. But he fails. To begin with, that one graduate of the course was able to read a five-hundred-page report in only two hours does unnecessarily indicate that such course is effective in reading speed. Perhaps the report he reads is very easy and even anyone can arrive such extend, or perhaps the graduate is just as rapidly as before he joined the course, and the course do little affection on him. Besides, another graduate mentioned who rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year also cannot prove the effective result of such course. For example, perhaps the rising of the person is just because of his honesty and wisdom which have nothing to do with the reading speed or even the reading speed is of little change comparing with before take such course. Without convincing evidence to rule out such possibilities, how can we ensure the effectiveness of such course and that such course will satisfy the needs of company.感觉你的证明和你的ts脱节了
Finally, can the company afford for such course even assuming which will satisfy the needs of company? The director shows that Easy Read costs only $500 per employee. May s $500 is really a small price for the company, but when we consider the total number employees, is it still little? Perhaps the company has almost 10000 or more employees, and if all are taken such course, the company had to afford more that $5,000,000. For that matter, whether the company can or will provide such money is a question.
