------题目------
Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served.
------正文------
In most cases, the modern purposes cannot be better than the value of old buildings. So I do not agree with the speaker. On the contrary, we should pay more attention to preserve the historic buildings.
The major reason why old buildings should be protected is because that these buildings are not only valuable but also hardly can be copied or rebuilt. There is no doubt that these buildings are of great value for at least representing a valuable record of any society’s past. In addition, even now the society has developed so rapidly and modernly, and science has advanced to a highest level among the whole human history, still many technical problems can be solved by our scientists nowadays with mastering and deep knowledge and technology. For example, the pyramid in Egypt, which has been researched by numerous scientists, presents its secrets to people. In the problem of how these buildings were constructed, our architects stay with assumptions but nothing. Through time make much technology and methods disappear in people or paper, fortunately, these buildings can play an essential role in recognizing lost knowledge. In short, undoubtedly, the modern purposes may be of great value, still they should not accomplish their goals with sacrificing the old buildings when that the reproduce of them is impossible is considered.
Besides, many old buildings existing at present have owned some special bearing. Tian An Men of China and Statue of liberty are enough to illustrate such point in that they lie in a symbol of country in certain extent. For example, the former is well known by all Chinese and a lot of foreigners. Even when I was young, a song-"I love Tian An Men” in Beijing has been popular in our society. To any Chinese, Tian An Men equals to our capture-Beijing-and in step stand for our country. Similarly, it may be a joke that people of the states know nothing about the Statue of liberty in USA. As a symbol of freedom and peace, it plays a important role in encourage American people to struggle to the unjustness and strive to the justness. In such cases, even a park has great value, can we allow it replace the meaningful old buildings?
Moreover, old buildings also can bring economic profits for the society. Now, many countries have paid more attention to the development of tour instruction. In China, many cities have placed emphasis on such new developing industry, such as Xi'an--it is famous for its Emperor Qin Shihuang’s Mausoleum and the Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses Museum. I soundly remember that last time I went to XI'an, the tourist were so many that I hardly have a place to stand. No one can deny the fact that the profits brought by the tourist to the city are greatly large and such industry will spur the economic development of the city.
In sum, to protect the old buildings always is a better choose than do the modern purposes. Therefore, when a confliction has appeared between them, more consideration should be prone to the preservation of the former.
