According to the argument, the editorial concludes that a new dormitory should be built to serve the increasing housing needs of the students. To support this, the author points out that the enrollment of Buckingham University is increasing and will increase in the future and so on. However in my view, the editorial relies on a number of doubtful assumptions and is therefore unconvincing.
Firstly, the author fails to show us any necessity to build a new dormitory. From the editorial, we do not know any information about the number of the students in the Buckingham University and whether the dormitory can meet the housing needs of the students. If the dormitory can still hold students in the university, it is absolutely unnecessary for the university to build a new dormitory.(这里我也这样批批了,但仔细的看过题目后发现,是五十年后房子不够用)What's more, the author predicts that the enrollment of Buckingham University will double over the next fifty years according to the present growing enrollment, it is quite unconvincing for he to assert this. Assuming enrollment of the Buckingham University will increasing in the future, but the mere evidence presented above is obviously not enough to prove that the dormitory over the next fifty years will become inadequate.要批趋势能持续多久?
Secondly, even the fact that the rent for an apartment is increasing does exist, it is terribly(感觉太过了,没见过这种用法) presumptuous for the author to claim that students will find it difficult to afford off-campus housing. First of all, that the housing rent is increasing is an unassailable fact, but by how much does it increase? Is it really beyond the affording ability of the students? And what the condition of the dormitory in the university is and does all of the students satisfy the condition ? In another (other) word, there may be many or even majority of students who want to rent off-school campus housing. Maybe the increasing rent only dues to the inflation there or local fast economics development makes the increasing so it is not strange that students can afford such cost on housing renting. The most important point is that the author do not tell us whether renting dormitory in school is cheaper than outside. So without such considerations about these possibility, the author fails to persuade us to believe what he asserts. 逻辑顺序不是很明显
Finally, it is quite subjective for the editorial to predict that students in the future will continuously be willing to be enrolled into the Buckingham University. From the editorial above, we can not see anything about this university including its campus and learning environment, the teaching facilities, its locations, the preponderant subjects and the reputation, and so forth. All of these factors will certainly affect their decision-making when they choose where they will accept their university education. So we can not foresee the trend of increasing enrollment in Buckingham University according to the mere facts provided above.
In conclusion, the editorial is unconvincing as it stands. To strengthen the conclusion, the author should provide information about the necessity of building a new dormitory and whether students want to live inside campus. To better evaluate the editorial, the author should present us the advantages of the university in attracting students and whether students want to be enrolled in Buckingham.
