I am ECE dept Graduate Advisor. I sign applicants' admissions (or rejections) at department level. I also recommend financial aid to Graduate Admission Office.
But the final decisions on scholarships are made by Graduate Admission Office, based on your GPA, GRE and TOEFL scores.
I am trying to help every student within my power.
Please post your questions about Poly and about New York.
I will do my best to answer all your questions, regardless whether you are willing to come to Poly or not.

Q1. Poly ECE 每年大概招多少学生,其中中国学生有多少?
A1. My estimate is 800 new graduate students, 1/4 are Chinese, including students from Taiwan.

Q2. Master 找 faculty 做 TA 或 RA 成功率高吗?
A2. About 250 master students can find some kind of on-campus work, including TA and RA.

Q3. 能介绍下其他Financial Aid的情况吗?
A3. About 80% master students can get "Graduate Center Scholarship", $3500-$8000/year,
      based on GPA, GRE and TOEFL scores. It is automatically renewed, if GPA is 3.33 or better.

Q4: "我拿到AD了,但是没有一点FINANCIAL AID的话,似乎太贵了,而且我是PHD,请问能有什么帮助办法吗,很想去的还是".
A4: You should apply to get it. That is when first applying toPoly, you should fill the financial aid application page in thepackage.  At this moment maybe it is too late to do that way. Do thefollows:
Send an email to Ravi at  rkarre01@utopia.poly.edu. He is the assistantof JC Bonilla, the head of Graduate Admission Office. JC is the man whomakes the decisions on the scholarships. Please write Ravi a mailsaying that you need GCS. You may tell him you know many students got
Poly's ad with scholarship. Don't write too long. Just 5 to 6 sentences will be good. Include your Poly ID. Good luck!

Q5: 是否有老师做memory呢? 因为自己现在是做这一块的.
A5: My answer is that I don't have any idea about who is doing "memory". I am sorry about it.

Q6: 请问贵校一年I20上的费用是多少?
A6: $32000. Assuming your scholarship is $5000/year, then your financial statement should
    show $32000-$5000=$27000.

Q7: 春季入学申请的问题
   因为我没申请2007年秋季入学,打算申请2008年春季的，我在website上看到ECE春季是招生的,但不知道是否有奖学金提供?"
A7: Yes, you may apply for Spring, 08. You can apply for scholarship also.

Q8: "目前我没有拿到任何的funding，只有一个admission letter。
上次打电话的时候，您说可能会考虑给我个$7,000的scholarship。
A8: I am sorry. You can ask Ravi for scholarship. $7000 is my hope. But that is beyond my power.
I just got to know one thing, fellowship 不递补.

Q9: "我来提个问题吧。我想也是很多打算去Poly的人想问的。就是NYC整体EECS毕业生的就业情况如何。再说一下Poly近几年EECS MS和PhD的就业情况。谢谢"
A9:I don't have the statistics about our graduates' jobs. I am on this graduate advisor position for just 6 months.  
Hopefully I can tell you more in the near future.
I am a 围棋fan. In Poly, I have about 6 围棋fan friends. I stay in Poly. All others work on IT positions in
New York City: Citi Bank, NY transit Authority, Countrywide Insurance and so on. Their salaries are from 100k-180k.

Q10: "陈老师我想问一下，我已经拿到7000一年的scholarship了，这个应该是研究生院给的吧，我还能不能找系里申请TA或者RA呢，或者说这样的可能性大吗？我申的是硕士。"
A10: 25%.

Q11: "请问陈老师，您说fellowship不递补，那么如果是有同学拒了RA的话，可以递补的吗？谢谢"
A11:Fellowship one type of is RA. At this moment, all offers are fellowships. For RA, try professors. It is hard to tell. By chance.

Q12: "7000的奖学金要在415之前给予答复吗？"
A12: No.

Q13. 在NYC，一个月食宿大概多少，住在学校附近？
A13. $600 and up.

Q14. 打工又能COVER多少费用呢？
A14.  打工 must be on-campus. If work otherwhere, I must tell you "INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CANNOT WORK OTHER THAN ON-CAMPUS".

Q15.  听说从布鲁克林校区到曼哈顿校区只要十几分钟？
A15.  Yes, by subway.

Q16. "陈教授,我想问问中国学生都住在哪呢?在校园里好吗?是很贵吧!!如果住在校园外,那每天往返的是不是很耽误时间和精力啊?还有,如果想住在校外,那是不是现在就要联系住房呢??怎么联系呢??谢谢!!"

A16. My answer is that 这里的中国同学会可以提前为你安排好住所或暂时住所。（学校宿舍贵，一般不建议）。大家可以联系中国学生会的几位同学：马展，Ma Zhan, (zma03@vision.poly.edu, zhan.ma@gmail.com),        叶舜元，Ye Shunyuan,  (sye02@utopia.poly.edu)，       范马修,（xfan01@utopia.poly.edu）。

Q17. "研院提供的GCS为每年$3500~$8000的减免学费（不需工作。具体数额取决与你的GPA,GRE和TOEFL成绩）。第一学期后，若你在Poly的GPA保持在3.3以上，GCS会自动延续。请问,poly-EE的课程成绩是用什么形式来表示的？GPA又是怎样计算的？"

A17. A=4.0, B=3.0 , C=2.0 and F=0.0. "3.3 以上" means that B,B,A or better. It is not hard to keep.
What is A? It is hardto tell. Usually, I give A for 85 and up. But it is not always. Now Iam teaching EL611: “Signals, Systems and Transforms”, EL630:Probability” and EL631: “Stochastic Processes”. For EL631, I will givemore A’s, because usually only good students take this course. Mostmaster students don’t take this course.
You can image how busy I am. I will not teach so many courses in the future. I will put more effort to help Chinese students.
Some professors are tougher than other professors. Really, there is no standard way.

Hi, beaking,
I graduated from poly about 10 years ago, and am working in downtown Manhattanfrom 8 years ago. A lot of people think NY is a city with high crimerate, I even have a friend who refused to step out of the airport tohave a dinner with me when he transferred his plane in JFK a few yearsago. But the fact is that, New York is the safest big city in USA.Nearly every working class here takes public transportation each day.Even in deep night, most of the buses and subway cars are pretty safe.As for the poly location, 15 years ago, the neighborhood was not sogood, but from 1993, MetrotechCenter changes the landmark profile forever. Nowadays, poly neighborhood is more like an extension of downtown Manhattanacross the river. Chase, Siac, Keyspan, Morgan Stanley, and many otherbig companies have branches there. A few 5-star hotels are also aroundto accommodate the business visitors. The subway stations around polyare among the busiest ones in NYC. Brooklyn as a whole may not have a good reputation, but Brooklyn also has a few of the best neighborhoods for living in NYC. A two-family house facing Manhattan which is 10-block away from poly worth $15 million now. Some part of South Brooklyn along the beach is one of the best living areas in USA.Surely, all of us will try hard to avoid living in the "Bad" part ofthe city, in this sense, those areas are more or less "remote" areasfor us, even more remote than China.

Q19. "陈教授您好! 我想问一下, 国际学生是不是只能在布鲁克林校区上课?我是EE的,我比较希望能去长岛校区,不知道是否有可能?
另外各个校园的研究方向有什么区别么?我想课程应该是相同的,只是教授不同这样? 谢谢!"
A19. It is all up to your choice. But 布鲁克林校区  has complete courses. Allother 校区  just have partial courses. Manhattan 校区 has no EE at all.

Q.20. 关于住房的问题，我还是想请教您，凭您的经验，我第一年是住在校园里好呢还是外面好呢？
A.20. 住在校园, $1000/month. Last fall semesters, someChinese students lived in 校园, because they didn't know. Then theyalmost all moved out after the first semester.

Q.21. 因为我有个做助教的奖学金，钱方面应该没太大问题，我已经申请了校内住房，考虑的是第一年会很辛苦，学习很紧张，所以如果坐来回地铁的时间很常，就挺影响的。所以
       我觉得住在学校会比较好。
A.21. In order to save time, of course, 住在校园 is better, if you have enough money.


Q.22. 但是我不知道学校里的环境好不好，是不是很闹呢？
A.22. No.

Q.23. 还有，如果我在学校住了几个月, 突然找到好房子了，还可以随时搬走吗？
A.23. I think not. I guess one semester is a unit.

Answer: You should apply for. That is when first applying to Poly, you should fill up the financial aid application page in the package.  At this moment maybe it is too late to
do that way. Do the follows:
Send an email to Mr Ravi Kiran at  rkarre01@utopia.poly.edu . (His name shows in the emails to you from Poly.). He is the assistant of Dr. JC Bonilla, the head of Graduate
Admission Office. JC is in charge of making decisions on the scholarships. Please write Ravi an email saying that you need GCS. You may tell him that from Gter you know many students got Poly's ad with scholarships. Don't write too long. Just 5 to 6 sentences will be good. Please always include your Poly ID. Good luck!
