Kaplan Assignment 19 n+ g. w5 U9 c* ?
Do you think that people are capable of finding happiness or are they always searching for something beyong what they have?; Z6 o) H# m+ q: H* [( |
_____________________________________________________7 P2 y& U5 N% Y: N0 `
  Just as an old saying states: “Every dog has its day”, so too did every person have the chance to be happy and contented. This is exactly true because happiness not only lies in big feat and task accomplished, but also in triviality such as a cup of lukewarm Sunday afternoon tea. But possessing contentment does not necessarily mean achieving one’s life goal. In fact, there are a great number of people who continue to work hard despite the happiness they have already achieved. So it is my opinion that people can truly achieve happiness, but they will seldom stop to be a hedonist, instead, they will endeavor for things beyond what they have.
! t# h3 E4 H1 `0 m  Y9 Y  One of the best literary examples to substantiate my point of view is Frodo in Lord of the Rings. A quiet, peaceful hobbit, Frodo is ultimately satisfied with his life. His uncle Bilbo bequeaths all the property to him, which includes “the most comfortable house” in the locality. Besides that, Frodo has a bunch of good friends, who are all kind and solicitous. In his case we can induce that Frodo leads a quite happy life. But look at what our hero desires: adventures. Constantly daydreaming about the “distant mountains, dragons and elves”, Frodo hopes all the time that one day he will go on an adventurous journey like the one Bilbo had. Instead of staying at his comfortable home smoking, he constantly goes into the forest to look for elves. It should thus be clear that in Frodo’s pursuit of adventurous experience, he set out not because he is not happy, but because he is already content with the happiness and thus want to achieve something novel, different and exciting. The capability he possess to feel happy and the desire he conceives to adventure does not contradict, moreover, the former promotes the latter.9 }7 E! y( y: `
  In real life there are also these kind of people. The 87-year-old New-Zealander who decides to revisit North pole is a good illustration of my idea. The old man, once the first to step onto the land of North Pole, is now determined to accomplish a new journey to his “second- homeland”. When asked why he want to take on the arduous and even hazardous journey, he answered that he had always been longing for “work” after he retired. We can then judge from this case that one does keep on striving even if he already has plenty to enjoy. As for this old man, he has enjoyed tremendous fame and applauds from his success and he is by no means not happy with his life, but all these comfort can not prevent him from desiring more.
2 q1 N. ~/ B- w9 A" }  To qualify my former argument, I should point out that there are people who indulge themselves in happiness and refuse to work hard after they achieve a small success. But for the majority of people , there are always endless goal for them to achieve .$ h  X, F% [, T! X3 P
  In conclusion, one can find and possess happiness while searching for something they do not possess. I am happy to draw this conclusion because both the capability to feel happy and the volition to continue striving contribute to human progress. The former assures mental health and an optimistic mind,; the latter promise a better tomorrow.

Kaplan Assignment two : " \$ [- |" Y, g8 `9 m: P2 C
If you want to become an expert in a certain field, do you need to have more talent or more motivation?& A8 W) Z7 ~# O, u) c# d

$ ?6 G) i4 W8 k0 O- D! c; o, gKaplan Assignment 2
1 r3 f% [$ a8 V& n% n# P) s  Talent is a requisite in one’s pursuit of expertise. Scientists without certain perspicacity can not discern changes which promise ground-braking achievements; musicians without astute sense can not become artists but artisans. But as important as talent is, talent alone can not lead one to a refulgent success. To achieve expertise above all others, to become the “big Boss” in one’s own field, one needs to have a strong mind that is full of motivation, which helps one to keep on striving all the time. People who substantiate my point of view are Walt Disney and my sister.0 M9 ]: e9 w* Q
  The designer of “Mickey Mouse”, Walt Disney, was once a poor man working in a mouse-ridden Kansas City studio. His humble career can hardly subsist his life and to him the chance of prosperity was rather small. But Disney had always cherished a hope that one day he would become successful in building up an animation empire, which would influence all the cultures and nations. He strived upon this dream with high motivation and finally God rewarded him with the “mouse”. The image of “Mickey Mouse” has since become an icon world-wide: even Franklin Roosevelt was obsessed with this lovely figure. Disney’s prosperity and authority in the animation field was established through his constant endeavour, which in turn was generated by a high motivation. He is of course talented, but it is the high motivation that drives him towards the eventual achievements. But for this strong will and determination, he would back out of his pursuit, and there may never be the Disney miracle." n' ^' b/ O% Y. q
  Sometimes high motivation can even make up for lack of talent, as in the case of my sister. A quiet and peaceful girl, my sister had never thought that one day she would become a debater. But it so happened that she was selected as a member of the school debate team. After a moment of surprise, she determined that she would do her best to prove that she was worth the selection. Immediately she embarked upon assiduous practice, training herself to speak most forcefully and powerfully. Her endeavour paid off when her school won a third prize in the regional competition. When asked how she accomplished this “mission impossible”, my sister told me that she had strived so hard to live up to her fellow students’ expectations, which motivates her to overcome all the difficulties. My sister’s success shows that people can achieve expertise and success in even fields they had no knowledge of previously. My sister is by no means a natural debater, but her motivation made up for her weakness and helped her achieves a certain level of expertise.
( u+ x. G% N8 B6 l  In conclusion, high motivation can definitely drive people towards expertise and success. I am glad to draw this conclusion, as it is good to know that everyone has an equal chance of being successful, despite their different level of talents. Walt Disney and my sister are definitely not on the same level of competence, but they both achieved their success through high motivation, a force we ordinary people can seek to possess.

1 Y( S2 l# k1 Q1 c8 sIn our life we may be constantly faced with changes and even adversities. To remain an optimistic outlook towards life, one needs to take hold of his mood. It is my opinion that people are able to keep a good emotion no matter what happens to them, as long as they know that they are in control. “Behind every dark cloud is a silver lining”, and behind every unpleasant situation there is a chance of turning the whole case favorable. This point of view is well substantiated by both literary figures and personal experiences.0 ~# Q* @: t/ t0 q* B! F/ a
One of the best literary examples to substantiate my point of view is Bilbo in Hobbit. A quiet and peaceful hobbit, Bilbo is by no means interested in adventures. But it so happened that he is involved in a hazardous journey with thirteen homeless dwarves. But rather than complaining about his bad fate, Bilbo quickly accepted his role as the “burgular” and join the dwarves in their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders and the grear dragon Smaug. Bilbo even acted a great role in the final success of slaying Smaug, the long-time terror of the region. During all these adventures, Bilbo remained an effervescent mood, confronting dangers he had never before imagines. He has one thousand reasons to feel despondent but all the time he managed to keep himself from drowning into a pessimistic mood. ) L' i( a) A  I& D! M9 j
In real life, we are also constantly faced with unpleasant situation. I remember that out family had a removal when I was ten. To a small child, removal often means the separation from familiar environment and close friends. I felt pessimistic about the prospects of future and was reluctant to move. But my elder sister held a different point of view. Though she also misses her friends and neighbors badly, she was willing to move and hoped to made new acquaintances with the residents there. Rather than looking back on the past endlessly, she looked forward to exploring the whole new world optimistically. I learned from my sister that everybody is capable of remaining happy if they are to see the situation as an opportunity rather than an unpleasant change. Change itself does nor not cause despondency and gloom; only the attitude of people towards changes matters.3 U9 `$ c- F: K4 b; e  f
In conclusion, everyone is able to held and remain an optimistic outlook towards life no matter what happens. It is up to ourselves to decide what attitudes we shall have and what mood we shall be in. I am happy to draw this conclusion, as it is good to know that happiness is always around us and within our reach. 0 Z5 p. q4 ]3 b. C- Z0 h$ c
