Don’t know what’s the purpose of this topic…..

Words: 689
From hunting and gathering in primitive society to logging and mining in today’s era, mankind have been leaving their footprints to various parts of our planet. Wilderness areas, which are the last regions left in states where human modification is minimal, are showing their pristine values to society. Based on this circumstance, I share the same sentiments as the author insofar as the significance of wilderness areas which calls for the prevention conducted by government aiming at the unpredictable human impact.

Wilderness areas are priceless present given to human beings from nature, which makes the preservation upon them indispensable. They provide us with a natural environment on Earth that has not been modified by human activity in some sense. While we so called civilized people enjoy the comfort and banal luxury of our dwelling, we do not realize that we are deprived of the necessities of life. Wilderness areas at the same time fill up this blank created by modern city. Their vital role in ecological study is self-evident. While at the same time they also deeply valued for cultural, spiritual, moral and aesthetic reasons. Walt Disney said before: “I don’t like formal gardens. I like wide nature. It’s just the wilderness instinct me, I guess.” From the mighty canyon to the humble marsh, wilderness areas furnish us the everlasting sources for human spirit and creativity on essence of life. Just like Charles Lindbergh said:” In wilderness I sense the miracle of life, and behind it our scientific accomplishments fade to trivia.” Wilderness areas are worth to be cherished by their unique characteristic other than the industrialized environment.

Most wilderness areas are remote and thus accessible to little amount of people. They are “wildness”, that’s where the word wilderness derived from. Lacking of human impact is the reason which makes the wilderness area remarkable and distinguished, but is not the excuse for government to negate the importance of preserve their nature states beforehand. Consider thousands of years ago, when human being’s strength is not that great, most areas on earth are in their pristine condition. With the population growth and technology improvement, civilized men have exerted more and more modifications on the environment used to be virgin. Nowadays, human impacts on nature environment have fused in every crop grown in the land which is plain before and or in every furniture made from wood which is logged from mighty forest. While not until recent centuries did people start to realize the gravity of wilderness---the last left untouched areas on earth, probably because of the breakthroughs in technology which give mankind unprecedented power on influence the nature. Prevention is better than cure. On the level of future development, even though the wilderness areas are remote and hard to access, it is still critical to alert civilians on preservation.

Preservation on publicly owned wilderness areas has evoked much controversy. In these various opinions, government’s attitude and decision are the most decisive ones. American government has taken a lot of successful measures to preserve wilderness areas. Yellowstone, established in 1872, is the first national park in the world. Till now, there are 58 officially-designated National Parks in the United States and its dependent areas. This U.S concept of national parks soon caught on in other countries and became widely spread since the establishment of Yellowstone. This national park system have successfully preserved the wilderness areas and stimulated the economic in those areas because of the traveling income. The United States also was the first country to officially designated land as ”wilderness” through the Wilderness Act of 1964. Wilderness designation helps preserve the natural state of the land and protect flora and fauna by prohibiting development and providing for non-motorized recreation. None of the social communities or individuals could achieve these goals by their strength.

In conclusion, wilderness areas are the lastly left areas on earth which are in their pristine conditions. They are indispensable in aspects of scientific study or stimulating the purest sense of mankind. We are responsible to preserve their natural states even though they’re accessible to only a few people. And government’s role is crucial by all means.
