TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
WORDS: 662         TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2007-6-29 上午 11:27:25

Open the historical text books, we will find lots of great individuals, Lincoln, Roosevelt and so forth, those shining stars did so fantastic jobs in making significant events and trends possible that they are indeed worth our attention and admiration.

The most magnificent sociopolitical events and trends moved forward, I believe, not so much because of the nameless and faceless ordinary people as through the insights and endeavors of the talented "famous few", whose extraordinary leadership, unmatched courage altered the course of the lost boats and helped to shape the world into what it is today. Those famous few knew how to make full use of every favorable condition around them, such as time, space, and people and so forth, they judged the hour and sized up the situation before coming up with fateful decisions or commands, in which laid their talent and intelligence. For example, in wars, sometimes a regional battle can change the whole thing. In the Gettysburg battle in World War 2, thanks to Lincoln, who delivered the famous “Gettysburg address” to inspire soldiers and to raise up their morale to achieve the final victory which propelled the end of the war. The similar thing happened in the period of great depression, Roosevelt, who carried out the reform helped America get rid of the economical crisis and influenced the whole world.

Even there exists such a fact that the famous few could not make it without the help of groups whose identities have long been forgotten. I still hold on to my opinion that different people contribute our world differed in ways and meanings. Comparatively, the famous few' endeavors and feats are more important and deserve more focus. We can never neglect the diligence and devotion of those ordinary people, it is them that carried the bulks and built the Great wall , the Pyramid, it is them that fought against enemies to death in World Wars, it is them that rebuilt the ruined countries and then rejuvenated our nations. Important as they are, they functioned, however, just like accessories of a giant machine, useless and meaningless if left alone, and someone has to assemble them, to operate the machine. Obviously, it is the famous few that shoulder the task. The subtle difference between the famous few and ordinary people lie more in their ability to look the overall situation of the events and foresee the trends and make the right, prompt decision despite disputes and controversies. For example, the same case of Lincoln again, although the victory of the battle of Gettysburg depended largely on the brave ordinary people, we can never rub out the magic power of the address that delivered by Lincoln.

So, there is no denying that we should focus more on the famous few, the extraordinary few.  From another point, they are more instructive and inspiring, the spirit and intelligent are worth special attention and particular research. Just as mentioned above, they distinguished themselves with special insight into the events, the trends, and even the whole world. By studying them, we can understand better their experience which shaped them, the whole condition of that time which altered them and the critical factors which enable them to rise up. What’s more, compared to those nameless ordinary one, their personalities are too unique to neglect.

when in retrospect, such great individuals such as Roosevelt, Lincoln not only altered the world, more importantly, they inspire us till today, certainly, we can not neglect them, their personal experience are miniatures of their period reflecting the change and vicissitudes of the time, they did unmatched and irreplaceable contributions to the whole world, they deserve more emphasis and attention than the ordinary masses.

The most magnificent sociopolitical events and trends moved forward, I believe, not so much (这个意思好像和你要表达的意思反了)because of the nameless and faceless ordinary people as through the insights and endeavors of the talented "famous few", whose extraordinary leadership, unmatched courage altered the course of the lost boats and helped to shape the world into what it is today. Those famous few knew how to make full use of every favorable condition around them, such as time, space, and people and so forth, they judged the hour and sized up the situation(I’m confused with this phrase)before coming up with fateful decisions or commands, in which laid their talent and intelligence. For example, in wars, sometimes a regional battle can change the whole thing. In the Gettysburg battle in World War 2, (II may be more formal,但是问题在于林肯可不是二战哦,civil war) thanks to Lincoln, who delivered the famous “Gettysburg address” to inspire soldiers and to raise up their morale to achieve the final victory which propelled the end of the war. The similar thing happened in the period of great depression, Roosevelt, who carried out the reform (不能少了连接词)helped America get rid of the economical crisis and influenced the whole world.

For example, the same case of Lincoln again, although the victory of the battle of Gettysburg depended largely on the brave ordinary people, (我觉得既然你说战争是由个人决定的我觉得你就不要说主要依靠大众了,改成需要很多战士,平民的支持更好)we can never rub out the magic power of the address that delivered by Lincoln.

So, there is no denying that we should focus more on the famous few, the extraordinary few.  From another point, they are more instructive and inspiring, the spirit and intelligent are worth special attention and particular research. Just as mentioned above, they distinguished (这个词用法好像有问题,因为distinguish做动词好像只有区分的意思)themselves with special insight into the events, the trends, and even the whole world. By studying them, we can understand better their experience which shaped them, the whole condition of that time which altered them and the critical factors which enable them to rise up. What’s more, compared to those nameless ordinary one (ones), their personalities are too unique to neglect.

when in retrospect, such great individuals such as Roosevelt, Lincoln not only altered the world, more importantly, they inspire us till today, certainly, we can not neglect them, their personal experience are miniatures of their period reflecting the change and vicissitudes of the time, they did unmatched and irreplaceable contributions to the whole world, they deserve more emphasis and attention than the ordinary masses.

从结构上看,非常完整. 先说个人在历史发展中的作用, 然后再说为什么要研究他们.
