If someone asks me what technology, I believe, has influenced people's life most, I will choose the invention of automobile without hesitation. In recent decades, all of us have experienced the great change brought by automobiles. For example, the distance, which people needed to walk for days, now only need hours for a car to cover. Meanwhile, some previously undeveloped areas boom as the immigration of people who search for new opportunities and challenges carried by cars. However, what will happen in the next twenty years? Will there be more cars or fewer? I believe that many factors will reduce the number of cars in the near future.
Although automobiles have improved our life style and push the social machine to a higher speed, they are also the cause of many social and natural problems. The most critical problem is the resource problems. Oil is the most important resource, because refined oil is the life blood of many industries. Everyday, the running cars waste millions of tons of oil, and some predictions told us that this kind of resource will be exhausted in tens of years. At that time, it is not the end of automobiles only, but also the end of many other industrial aspects. Meanwhile, automobiles are also blamed for the global warming. Researches show that the carbon dioxide released by automobiles will increase the global temperature and finally cause various natural hazards which may finally ruin the human civilization. Many people have already noticed these serious problems and are trying to solve the crisis. For example, in Holland, the government paid a lot of money to improve the bicycle parking places to encourage the use of bicycles, instead of automobiles. This is a strategical policy to save the limited resources and use them to more crucial places, and at the same time, the natural environment of Holland is also saved. As more and more people realize the harm caused by automobiles, I believe the use of cars may be reduced in the near future.
Furthermore, as the modern technology advancing, especially the widely expanded internet, people will become less dependent on the automobiles. Internet is a great net composed by numerous personal computers and the Internet has almost covered every corner of the world. From the Internet, we can get the newest information all over the world and can download the classical books to read, that is, we do not need to visit libraries any more; we also can buy what we need through internet and the goods will be sent to our home directly, that is, we need not to drive a car to supermarkets or marts to get what we need any more; some of us even can finish our work on the computer and exchange the ideas with colleagues through internet, that is, we need not to move to the office everyday any more. The internet has connected the whole world as a web. Without moving out, we can finish many things through internet, which means, one day in the near future, automobiles will no longer be the necessity of our life. Automobiles were born from the modern technology; however, the newly developed technology can also save us from the control of them.
In a word, as more and more people realize the problems caused by cars and as the emergence of the newly developed technology, the automobiles will no longer be the necessities of our life in the near future. At that time, the life standard will be further improved. This is the result of social advancement.
