87:"In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries." 2007-07-23
Is the beginner more likely to make important discoveries than the expert? The author contends so, which I could not disagree with. In my opinion, it is opinionated to say who may more likely to make important discoveries, the beginners or the expert, for both of them have their superiority and inferiority, and the situation varies different in realms.
Before penetrating into discussion, we have to make definition of the beginners and the experts. Quote a proverb from Newton, “If I have seen further, it is only because I have stood on the shoulders of giants”. So, there is no entire beginners in making discoveries, they all with the basic knowledge. Just like a musician must know how to read and composite score and a scientist must have the basic knowledge of natural science. However their knowledge is not as abundant as the experts and their experience is much less than the experts. Thus, the definition of beginner and expert is relative.
For the beginner's sake, the crucial role that he could make important discoveries is his newness, which at the same time is the essential role impedes his important discoveries. On one hand, firstly in science, a beginner is one with curiosity, imagination and courage, who is incline to try every ideas in his thought into practice and fear no failure. This is the most important in exploring a discovery, as science need creation and innovation. Many essential discoveries of humans resort to these ideas unfettered by experience. Bill Gates, when he found Microsoft and applied himself to the exploitation of DOS, he was just in his twenties and dropped out from Harvard. Secondly, in art, the beginner could bring their new ideas in their work, which is usually different from the mainstream. These ideas bring new inspiration to the field, and may impulse a movement in art ultimately. Claude Monet, a beginner in oil who use his own way to represent the life, not to follow his contemporaries, leads impressionism to prosperity. On the other hand, lack of fundamental knowledge of any filed will impede the discoveries of beginners. Only imagination and creation is not enough to success, the apprehending of the basic knowledge and the scientific methods are more essential in some extent.
For the expert’s sake, fraught with knowledge and experience is the crucial factor to make discoveries or neglect them. The abundant knowledge and experience is the basis to make discoveries, and make them deep comprehension in their field. if they could do research more precise and more daring, unfettered by their thinking set, they may also make achievements even after some achievements. In science, Edison, make thousands of inventions in his life; Marie Curie, even won the Nobel Prize twice in her life and discovery two elements in chemistry. While in art, Beethoven is famous for his 9 symphonies in world, and Vinci, for the contribution not only in paintings but also in sculptures. On the contrary, if experts immerses in their former achievements and do not open their eyes to the new world, they may be forgotten by the history, only one discoveries remains. Even more, this bad trend will also destroy a new discovery and even neglect a great expert to the world. So, for an expert, the most important is to preserve open minds and initiative in creation.
So, as a conclusion, based on my definition of beginners and experts, we may conclude that, it is more likely for a beginner with enough knowledge of the filed to make important discoveries, as he/she is fraught with creativity, while it is more likely for an expert unfettered his experience and thinking set to make discoveries.
