TOPIC: ARGUMENT183 - Many employees of major United States corporations are fearful that they will lose their jobs in the near future, but this fear is largely unfounded. According to a recent study, a majority of companies expected to make new hires in the coming year, while fewer companies expected to lay off employees. In addition, although it is very disturbing to be laid off, the proliferation of programs and of workshops designed to improve job-finding skills has made being laid off far less painful than it once was.

This argument which want to loose people's fear of being laid off suffers from some logical fallacies, although provide a study and seemly reasonable analysis.
The first problem of this argument is the new jobs provided by companies may be not in accord with the author's assertion. Although through the study, we know that lots of companies will hire new workers next year, and fewer expected lay off employees, without the number of the survey's companies, we could not identify what is the definition of a majority. Maybe the number of the companies this survey involves is a big amount, assumed 1000, but the majority is 600, so there's still 400 companies will lay off employees in the next coming years. Is this figure make the employees unworried? Moreover, even if in the survey the majority is much more than the fewer, we still could not guarantee the author's conclusion, as no details provided to support that the companies in the survey are all major corporations in USA, while this argument focusing eliminate the fear of large corporations' employees. Addtionally, even if the companies in this survey are proper, without no statistics what the number will be laid off, the employees may still in fear.
Another weak point of this argument is that proliferation of programs and workshops designed to improve job-finding skills could not the pain of losing a job. Maybe the job losing is the employees' favorite, and he spread his effort to do well in. Or perhaps the employees laid off is the one who supports the whole family, so this laying off will add the pain to not only himself/herself, but also the family. Additionally, this increasing programs maybe not suit for this employees, and could not make them to get the equal satisfied job as before.
Finally, as job is a personal work, whether laid off or not is not only be decided by the corporation but also the personal ability in work. His ability in communication, in management, in cooperation must be taken into consideration. So the survey and the programs could not this fear, especially in today's rapid life. If the author wants to make employees less fearful of losing their jobs, he/she must provide more details about the companies in survey, and more information of these increasing programs. But the most is to improve the employee's ability, which is more crucial in keeping jobs. |
