Should a city try to perserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern building? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.


With the development of economy and the necessity of accommodating an increasing population, much land space is needed to build large and modern buildings; hence, some people believe that replacing the historical buildings with modern ones can be the best option. However, other people hold that historical buildings should be well preserved rather than destroyed because of the cultural and historical values that these buildings carries. In my opinion, while it is true that modern building can provide comfortable dwellings for human beings, historical buildings are possessed with both historical and economic values.

In the first place, historical buildings are good places for people to know more about the history of a certain area or even a country. These places can serve as live history books which are easy to read and understand. For instance, China's Forbidden City which is located in Beijing, the capital city of China, is the largest palace complex ever found in China. When you walk in it, you can with no difficulty grasp the development of ancient China and enjoy the great culture since almost all the emperors in China once lived there and things they used at their time are well preserved. Just walk through very corner of the City, you are surely to be a knowledgeable man in terms of Chinese history. In this aspect, the historical buildings should not be replaced by modern buildings which bear few historical meanings.

Moreover, we must realize the economic value that historical buildings can bring out. Historical buildings are very important resources for tourism. Generally, historical buildings bear some cultural values that are unique to a place or a country and as is known to us, people are always curious about these exceptional cultural phenomena. Therefore, it is highly likely that they will pay to visit the place. As a result, the tourism is promoted in areas with historical buildings and similarly, the economic development is guaranteed to some degree.

Admittedly, there are some historical buildings which have few values in respect to cultural and historical meaning. And the existence of these buildings are hampering the further development of local area, in this sense I am sure they should be replaced with more comfortable apartments or profitable commercial centers. However, this must be based on the fact that they indeed have no historical meanings.

In conclusion, we should try to preserve the historical buildings due to the benefits they can bring about.
