Are those who thinks that politics and morality were separate realms fail to understand either the one or the other as the author asserts? I fundamentally disagree with the author to extend that a politics should not emphasis too much on the morality, or else he or she should achieve little in the politics. However this does not mean that a political leader can ignore the morality for the reason that every one in the society should not do so as a part of the society.
The job of a political leader is to build, expend and maintain the fame, prosperity and national influence of the country, nation and the like. For this purpose sometime he has to stand beyond the bound of morality. (TS)So in this we would think that politics and morality are separate realms. A leader who wants to maintain highest morality will not be an effective leader. For the good of the nation, the leader does not always tell the truth. Sometime he has to withhold something to the public or tell something untruth for the purpose of console the public and deterrence of the enemy. He should not, for example, tell the public about the location and quantity of the nuclear weapon of the nation, or he could tell people about the politics maneuver the government used and the real intention of the government. As by doing so the security of the nation is jeopardized.
Furthermore we cannot define goodness of a political leader by the standard of the morality. A political leader with the highest morality may be a good leader, but this does not means that a leader whose morality is not that high enough is not a good deader.(easily bring misleading) In fact, many great leaders in politics have done something, except from those needed for its political purpose, disobey the morality to some extend. We have to admit that Hitler, who carries out the racial extinction which highly disobey the morality of ethic, is a greater leader who has push the Germany to be one of the strongest nation of the world. Clinton who has the love affair with Lewinsky actually has done a quite job and led the America out of long-term economic depression. And those who we perceive as greater leader such as Roosevelt, Eisenhower Kenned and so on, all have extra-marital affairs. We can not deny that they are great presidents just because of this, after all the standard of a effective leader is determined by that of the accomplishment in the political field, but not in the morality field.
However it is no indication that political leader can not pay any attention to the morality. As a citizen of the democratic society, every people in which should try to maintain a high morality, so that the society would be a harmonious one. The political leader, focus on the public attention, also should maintain such high morality, not have to be the highest, but should at least as the same as the average people do. Thus the public would believe and follow him or her without always doubt on the decision he or she made. Then the leader can do their job better.
To sum up, politics and morality are separate to some extend, but we should attention not to go to far to assert that politics does not need any morality.
