The reading passage introduces the education system before college in U.S., which learnt from Europe. However, the listening passage indicates some flaws of this education system.

On the one hand, differences among different students are overlooked in this system. The professor in the listening material states that different students may have a lot of things distinct, such as social, mental, physical aspects.But the education system mentioned in reading passage do not pay attention to this. Schools arrange same curriculum for all the students whatever their interest or merits. In this case, students can not do what they are good at or what they like.

On the other hand, the reading material suggests that students would be asked to repeat one year if they do not meet the requirement. However, the speaker in the reading passage does not think it is a good way to do so, because students are evaluated as a group not as an individual, and teachers also join together to assess students. In this case, it is not necessary to ask the students to require what they have learnt entirely. It wastes a lot of time of the students because not all of what the students have learnt are not eligible.

In sum, the reading passage points out some shortcomings of the education system mentioned in the reading passage.
