   Is it the artist who gives society of lasting value instead of critic, as the speaker claims? In
a sense, I tend to agree that artists created a great of outstanding works, however, the
speaker request the question by overlooking the critical role of critics. In my point of view,
both the artist and the critic are crucial to give the society something of lasting value .The
speaker need an overall consideration when deciding who plays a more important role in arts'
lasting value.
   Most works' value can be recognized at the moment we encounter art and appreciated by
contemporary people and society directly,whose value do not require the comments of
critics.For example, the monarch of Europe immediately recognized Mozart's talents to music
by granting him their most generous commissions. The Pope appreciated Michelangelo's
artistic greatness by subsidizing his patronage. Populace appreciate Mark Twain's works due
to his novels based exactly on the society's hidden ideas and problems, .  These works give a
all-wave impact our senses, spirits, and souls directly and need not to be later approved or
disproved by critics.
   However, there are also many works whose head and shoulders a is highly above the
recognition of the contemporary people, and critics can help us layman understand and
interpret it better. Take Vincent Van Gogh as an example, who is a great impressionism
master, with a vast outstanding art works, used to be treated unfair. During his lifetime, he
only sold one painting from hundreds of his great works, however, after his death , art critics
recognized his talents in arts and serve him as a milestone in art field and his works become
priceless. His most famous work--Sun Flower is highly appreciate by the people who leave
after him. In short, although his work is not recognized by the contemporaries, luckly, critics
ultimately found the significant value in his works and share its aesthetic with common
people.
   Finally, critics who is familiar with a particular artist and his /her works might have certain
insights about those works can help people determine which art is worth time to pay
attention. For example ,a new novel writtren by a best-selling writer might be a unreadable
work filled with longueur and at this moment the critic can call our attention to avoid wasting
money and time on it.For that matter, we can also choose a better movie or film to
appreciate under the guidance from critics.
   In summary, artists and critics supplement each other:artists creat valuable works, while
critics draw people's attention towards those works and remind these values in our mind ever
now and then to keep their values ever lasting. So both the artists and critics are responsible
for the art's lasting value.
