TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the author concludes that in order to increase the profits in their stores in the chain, they should not stock their imported cheese and concentrate on domestic cheese for the sells is better. To support this conclusion, the author provides a situation that the five best-selling cheeses at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin last year. Besides, the author also cites a survey conducted by a magazine to show that an increasing preference for domestic cheese in the subscribers. I find this argument is logically unconvincing in several respects.
First of all, from the evidence provided by the author, we could not judge that the domestic cheese will sell better and better. Although the five best-selling cheese at their newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin, we have no evidence to prove that this tendency will be lasting in the following years, for example, perhaps the reason why this cheeses sells well is that its low price in that year because of sales promotion and what might be stop in the next year or even this year. What's more, the best-selling in newest store cannot stand for all the country, might the people there prefer this cheddar cheese from Wisconsin more than other places. So if the author could not rule out these possibilities, the claim is not convincing at all.
Secondly, the survey provided by the author is not reliable either. It is said that there might be an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers, however, we could not rule out that most subscribers of this magazine is prefer domestic cheese while people prefer import cheese do not like to subscribe this magazine, or the subscribers of this magazine only occupy a little part in people who prefer cheese, so the result of this survey is not acceptable as well. As a result, from this vague information given by the author, we can not judge whether there is an increasing preference in the area of all the country.
Last but not least, even assuming that domestic cheeses become more and more popular in all the country, it is not necessary to discontinue stocking imported cheese and concentrate on domestic cheese. Also, discontinue stocking imported cheese may not improve profits in the stores at all. It is possible that the profit of imported cheese is more that domestic cheese, although the sells of imported cheese might lower than domestic one. And as we all known that, profits is influenced by many factors, such as management and area of the stores, so only stop stocking imported cheese and concentrate on domestic cheese might not be the best way to gain profits as the author claims.
In sum, the argument is not so persuasive as it seem, to make it more acceptable, the author should demonstrate the sells of domestic cheese do well and the tendency of it will lasting for a long time. Besides, the author should provide more evidence to show that imported cheese have no profit and market in the whole country, and stop stocking it is the best way to gain profits compare with other methods. |
