In the argument, the author concludes that the company should discontinue stocking many of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheese so as to make more profits, Close scrutiny on the evidence, however, reveals that it lends little credible support to the conclusion.
To begin with, the author’s conclusion based on a presumptuous assumption that people like domestic cheese better than imported cheese. Though the author provides two evidences, however, the evidences the author offered is scant to prove it is the truth. First considering the evidence that the five best-selling cheeses at the newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. It is possible that cheddar cheeses had a (an) advertisement campaign or sale promotion last year in that store and the price is quite satisfactory, so they became the best-selling cheeses. After the promotion, the sell of domestic cheeses will (may) decrease. Or it is possible that people who live near that store like the taste of domestic cheese or that band of cheese, whereas in most other stores people does not like the taste of domestic cheese, and the best-selling cheeses are all imported cheese. Next considering the recent survey, although it indicates a increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers, it no indication(it does not indicate) that people like domestic cheeses better than the imported cheese. It is possible that the preference for domestic cheeses is very low before, and though the preference increased. People(, people) still like imported cheese more. In addition, common sense informs us that normal people do not subscribe a magazine specialized in cheese. So it is possible that those subscribers do not represent those cheese consumer. If any of the scenarios is true, the conclusion of the argument is open to doubt.
Furthermore, given that the author substantiate the forgoing assumption, the argument is still premature as the author unfairly assumes that profits of the domestic cheese is higher than that of the imported cheese. It is possible that though most of the people like the domestic cheese, still some people like the imported cheese. And If the price of the imported cheese is higher than the domestic cheese and the profit margin of imported is also higher, than even if fewer people buy the imported cheese, the profit of the imported cheese is still considerably high. If true,(If so) then the author’s accommodation that discontinue stocking many of varieties of imported cheese is not wise.
Moreover, the author overlooks other ways to increase the profits and the bad consequence that discontinues stocking imported cheese could bring about. Though discontinue stocking imported cheese may can reduce expenses and thus may increase the profits. (这句话没说完,或者和下句合并) However it is possible that if those who buy both domestic and imported cheeses can not satisfactorily buy imported cheese in the store, then maybe they will not buy any cheese in the store forever. In addition there are many other ways to increase the profit rather than discontinue stocking imported cheese such as improve the service, have a advertisement campaign and so forth. So without considering these, the argument is unconvincing as it stands.
The argument is logically flawed, to bolster it the author should provide more information to prove that people like domestic cheese more that imported cheese and imported is no longer profitable, to better assess the argument I also want to compete it with other alternative method to improve profits.
